'Check engine' light on- no owner's manual. Need I worry? V70-XC70 1998

The check engine light just came on in my V70 awd (55k miles), and I do not have an owner's manual to let me know what that means. My wife has driven the car about 10 miles since it came on. Any suggestions/ ideas what might be wrong? Is this something that I need to have checked immediately (i.e. before driving AT ALL)? How drastic a reapair does this usually turn out to be? (Anyone else had this light go on?) Also, is there any sort of an "on-line" owner's manual? Thanks, as always!

The check engine light means one of up to 11 systems has faulted enough to trip your MIL (malfunction indicator lamp). If you put and OBD II (ON-board diagnostics) reader on it, it will tell you which of hundreds of codes it might be. All cars made after 1996 are OBD II compliant (US at least, can't speak for other countries). While these codes shouldn't be ignored, they usually don't spell immediate impending doom for your car. Common problems are the fuel delivery or emmissions systems including catalytic converter. I bought myself an OBD II code reader on EBAY. These can read the codes and come with a book to tell you what the numbers mean. Knowing what the code is does not necessarily mean the answer as to what to repair is clear cut. I have an intermittent P0422 from my 01 V70 and sometimes it clears itself. But in looking it up on the Volvo Vadis system, there are several things to check for this code. OBD Readers cost $75/$125 if you're a smart internet shopper. I got a nice new one for $123 delivered with a hard carry case (Ebay). Also, I'd recommend getting yourself an owners manual just for reference. You can find them every day on EBAY for under $25. If you had an 01 V70, I actually have an extra complete manual set, but I think yours is 98. Good luck!

First of all don't panic. A check engine light indicates that a code has been set.

The owners manual won't help you. You need to buy an OBDII compliant code reader and read the codes yourself from the car's OBDII port in the center arm rest, or take the car to an indie volvo shop to have the codes read.

This is the only way to find out what's malfunctioning and needs repairs. If the car is driving fine the you have some time.

Sometimes it can be as simple as the gas cap not being tight enough. Once it is tightened it takes something like 3 hot/cold engine cycles and the light will turn off by itself, usually about 3 days.

Normally the light has something to do with emission controls so there is time. My local dealer wants $75 a pop to turn it off so you can imagine the potential embarrassment of paying $75 each time the gas cap isn't tight enough.
