Radiator fan 850

Greetings,
When my wife got home today and shut off the car, the radiator fan continued to run. This just started happening today. I am aware that the fan is designed to run with the engine off, but it is cool outside, and our car has never done this, even in very hot weather.
She also told me, when stopped at a red light, upon acceleration, the engine would 'stumble' but then do all right. the engine stumble thing is not all the time. I just took it out for a test, and it did fine for me. The fan thing did happen. When I turned off the car, the fan went off, and then after about 20 seconds, it started. I noticed when I test drove it, there was a louder sound, like the fan is running too fast. The fan does shut off after 2 or 3 minutes.

Any ideas?
Thanks,
Stuart

Radiator fan 850

There actually is two speeds to the fan. It's controlled by high or low voltage to the fan motor, controlled by the fan relay. Sounds like maybe the relay is starting to crap out and mixing up the signals or a bad temperature sensor on the motor sending high heat signals to the ECU which in turn sends a signal to the fan relay to run the radiator fan at high speed. The relay is located there at the top of the radiator just above the fan. The engine temp sensor is located on the motor there by the thermostat. Try unplugging the temperature sensor the next time the car comes home and the fan stays running. If it stops running then the temp sensor is bad (assuming the motor is below 200 degrees and needs no fan help...).

Radiator fan and water temperature sensor 850 1997

Greetings,
I replaced the water temp sensor (just below the thermostat). I started up the car, and I still had the problem. I decided to disconnect the battery (in an attempt to clear the computer), let it sit for half and hour, then reconnected the battery, and all is well!!! I don't know if I needed to do the battery disconnect, but I did, and everything is working now.
Stuart
