Coloured sludge on oil dip stick 850

I have seen this posted before and I understand that it is not a problem, but can anyone shed some light on this subject?
I own a 740 gle with 170k miles and the dipstick never has condensation or coloured sludge on it, just nice clean oil. Whereas my 96 850cd with 110k miles allways has condensation on it even after a good run (my thermostat is new and runs at 3o/c)and also has an orange coloured sludge, mainly at the business end of the dipstick. I let volvo change my oil and do an engine flush but it's still there. As i have said i'm not worried but could someone answer this question.
As an aside, i think this is a great site and have to get a 'fix' daily. Keep up the great Q & A. Thanks to anyone who takes the time to reply.

This engine can have a slightly blown head gasket, for a long time, with no other symptoms, Might the sludge be a little foamy and tan colored? Any water dripping from your exhaust? Check, compression test or preasure test you coolent system, I suspect your getting a bit of coolent into your oil.

    We have owned 4 740s, and 3 850s.

I have never seen the sludge form on one of the 740s, and have seen it on each 850 to a different degree. We check oil level every week, so I've seen a lot of dipsticks.

I think that dipstick location is one difference, the 850's is out front, and probably a lot cooler. There are many more postings of '"over-cooled" 850 engines as opposed to 740s. I also think that the 740s warm up a bit quicker than the 850s.

Even though you clean the dipstick, there is some sludge left in the tube afterward. As an experiment, I cleaned the tube one time , and it took quite some time for the sludge to return.

BTW, I ripped a rag into very narrow strips, tied it to the bottom of the dipstick, and ran it up and down the tube, I did this several times with clean rag strips until it came out clean. It was quite a chore, and not worth the effort.
