I posted on turbobricks but any extra help
the junk yard is selling a 94 850 for $1500 and I can get the body work done free. but what kind of mods can I do. I think its a glt. any links to where I can find specs on 850s. Maybe I could rebuild the motor and mod at the same time. has anybody megasquirted an 850
any help appreciated
thanks
Matt

i don't believe the glt existed in 1994...took a hiatus....

if u can do it urself...modding a n/a 850 shouldn't be too bad....i've read on a forum where one took his n/a 850 from 160ish hp up to 200+ hp...similar performance numbers as an 850 turbo.

but if not...it'd be easier with a stock turbo...

anyway...look up the specs on volvo's ownercircle website... sign in on it... manual, factory specs...all in there.

I would have to disagree with 'same performance' as a turbo.
No NA will ever have the same performance. Its a different engine all together. Differerent tranny. Turbo's begin at 222 and go up from there.
And they can be modded to 300 hp for far less than trying to get an NA to 200HP

I agree with you that its a totally waste of time and money to mod an 850 NA.
If you want to performance.. sell the NA/GLT and buy a turbo. You'll get the extras that come with the turbo models also.

The only mods that I have seen for my 850 are cosmetic ones, all the mods are usually made for the turbos. Everyone says it's expensive to drop a turbo engine in an N/A, but if you have time and money, that would probably be the best route if you want good performance. The N/A is fine in my opinion. If I had a turbo, I'd get in more trouble. I firmly acknowledge my lack of responsibility and control behind a fast car.

the 850 is a VERY different beast to the b230...for instance the 2.5 20 valve not only has exhaust headers as standard but also dual length inlet tracts with EMU controlled vlaves controlling which tract is in use at a given engine condition to maximise torque..

i guess what im saying is that either in NA or turbo mode its a reasonably maxed engine anyways...so things like injector upgrades have a low rate of payback wihtout other majour surgery...

of ocurse one can buy a t5 and 'chip' it and drop a drain pipe on the back and make it go very very very quickly indeed..but then again as standard they aint exactly slow...

I havent much experience with t5's but do own botha 940t and a 2.5 20valve na 850...(not the performance by the book is about equal!) and i have to say that the 850 is NOT slow...it just feels it because of the almost flat torque curve of the engine...as apposed to the 940t where it sort of goes..then the turbo arrives and kicks you in the ass!.....performance about the same but the 940 FEELS quicker!

The best engine mods were done at the factory when they built
the turbo versions (and the internal changes were pretty extensive;
it was not a bolt-on turbo application). As a result, there is
practicly nill info on souping up the normally aspirated engines.
It is always cheaper (and more practical) to sell a normally
aspirated model and buy the equivalent with a turbo engine. As a
result, no real after-market goodies for the normally aspirated engines
and very little info on "megasquirting" them.

Nice cars, but if its a GLT, dont expect it to go fast.

thanks for all the advice. I am looking for anything faster than a 740gl wagon and something reliable. 0-60 7or8 seconds
Thanks again
Matt
