Wow! Just got a quote from the Volvo dealer of $110 just to program a keyless remote! Is this true?

The car came with one and I purchased another one cheap off @bay with the same part # etc.

I read that with older models you can turn the ignition on and off 4 times to program but that doesn't seem to work as the light on the dash doesn't do anything.

Any suggestions?

    When I bought my 99 I was short one key and one remote. McDonald Volvo could
    not cut the key, so had to go to a special key maker. Then key had to be
    programmed (downloaded via satellite) at Dealer with security codes, etc.
    Spent about $ 100 for entire process. Ouch! But this is the price we pay for
    "secure" cars. Good luck.

    Dealer required to program remote. Have to download software to the car to get it into programming mode, then the remote can be programmed. Software runs about $28.00 and my dealer charges anywhere from $60 to $100 labor depending on which service advisor/tech draws the job.

    After turning the ignition on & off, you have to hit either the "lock" or the "unlock" button--search the site under "program remote"

      Dean,

      Once you've tried this, can you post as to whether or not it worked? I seem to recall reading either here or on the google volvo group that for a 99 you needed to go back to the dealer for programming. I lost one set of keys to my 99, and was just quoted $365 to replace the key and remote (keys, remote, labor and programming.)Ouch!!

        Hi there,


        We have the 1998 V70-T5 and it came with only 1 remote and key.


        So....I purchased 2 remotes [correct, matching part number as my original] on Ebay from a very nice guy. Both were only $35.00 and he didn't charge me shipping. He was prompt and they were new in a sealed plastic package. However...the dealer just told us that it will cost us $130.00 to have both of them programmed. Ouch! Evidently it does involve more than just a few key clicks.

        RE key - expensive too. OUCH!!
