'Brake Failure Stop Safely ASAP' Message S80 1999

I have had recent electronic message: "Brake Failure Stop Safely ASAP", once this message appears, a few seconds later the tach and speedometer go to zero. The symbols light up on the right side of the dash (!), ABS, skidding car. The odometer no longer functions. The fuel guage and clock continue to function. Brake fluid level seems OK. After restarting the message goes away, typically coming back several minutes later. Dealer downloaded a software update, but this hasn't eliminated the problem, however, it has eliminated other messages "transmission service required", "Engine Service Required", etc. The only constant is the brake message. On a unrelated note (I think), I have had SRS Airbag message on for a few weeks, Dealer says I require a Air Bag Control Module.

I coincidentally discovered that sounding the horn will clear the "Brake Failure" error message. But it will still recur. I don't understand how the horn is connected to the ABS module?

I also notice that by dimming the dash light to minimum level, this error message appear less frequently.

My 2.0T had the same error message after doing about 90,000 km. Still looking for a solution other than replacing the entire ABS module.

I had the same type of stuff going on with my 99 S80. I ended up replacing the ABS Control Module and its been 2 months with no warning lights of any kind.

Thanks for the reply, what did it cost to replace the ABS Module?

I had the exact same problem with my S80. Took several visits to the dealer, until they eventually decided it was the ABS module. Cost GBP £750 to replace including part (£650). Has fixed the problem - I have been driving the car for at least six months since without the errors.

Also, the car is perfectly safe to drive - the worst case is you could loose ABS, but this is an electrical problem, not a hydraulic fault.

        Good Luck,

        Mike.

I'm having my ABS control unit replaced in a few days for the same reasons. There is one possible safety issue: when the speedometer goes to zero, something mystical and magical happens that locks the transmission into "limp home mode" (3rd or 4th gear). Good luck trying to start from a stop on an incline. this will also be evident by the flashing yellow "up" arrow on the dashboard. After turning the car on and off a few times, the flashing yellow light might still be there, but the transmission will start behaving normally. Good luck.

'Brake Failure Stop Safely ASAP' Message - GUTTED! S80 1999

Had A guy called Vic Rocha:
          http://home.earthlink.net/~vicrocha/Volvo_Parts/Volvo_V70_ABS.htm

in the states repair my ABS module for less than £150 (including p&p from UK).

Incidentally it seems that this is a poor design problem with the unit; apparently anyone with an S80 thats done more than 60k is liable to have an ABS controller fail at any time, and the stealer charges a fortune to replace.

Had mine repaired in December & (touch wood) so far so good.

Had the ABS control unit replaced and everything seems fine so far. I should have mentioned that mine was in a 1999 Cross Country with 60K (imagine that). These have the same pattern and same problem as S80's and others...Volvo is clearly capable of better than this.
