Troubleshooting dead rear deck speakers: where to start? 850 1994

When i got the car from the p.o. both rear speakers would not play. All others, including rear doors, are fine. I have the factory radio/tape unit in the car.

I was wondering if anybody else had this problem. Is this a common problem with a common fix? I'm not even sure about the wire routing. Troubleshooting tips would be great.

thanks,
jon

Check to see that the magnets are still attached.

Undoubtedly, that is what it is. I just opened mine up, Volvo makes them VERY difficult and cumbersome to access as you will see. . . Not only had both magnets fallen but both speakers were shot. If I were you, I would not waste your time trying to disassemble the unit(s) yourself, and take it to Magnolia Hi-Fi or somewhere and get them replaced, letting them do the grunt work of removing the speakers via the trunk (on your back) then trying to remove the grills etc. A big pain in the ass. I spent $127.00 on new speakers and it makes a big difference.

Oh, by the way--if you want to keep the Volvo grill/speaker covers, make sure you tell them that before they start replacing them, if that's the route you want to go..

One of my tweeter magnets fell. I simply hot glued it back into position.
Took around 20 minutes total. I found it simple. If your planning on replacing them I believe I heard here its an odd size speaker. 6x8 or something.

I wish you were around when I had to do it. My speakers however, were shot anyway (both magnets had fallen). They are an odd size but the inset can be cut to size (not the car itself).

I notice when my mag dropped the speaker wouldnt work at all. I think the fallen magnet was nulling the other one that it feel onto. After I hot glued it bothe the main speaker and and tweeter bother started to work again.
