850R Front Spoiler 850 1997

I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a repair for this thing. Last winter I hit a black ice patch and it cracked the left side of the spoiler. I had it professionally fixed and repainted but then the crack just showed up again. This spoiler is hella expensive to replace, but I dont want a cyclical process of having my car in the shop, since I need to drive to work every day. It is impossible to avoid all the dips and parking lot exits in order to keep it pristine. Any suggestions would be appreciated. THX

Go to a boat shop and get a product called "Marine Tex."

    http://www.marinetex.com/marinetex%20prod%20info.htm

Unbelievable stuff. I've fixed airdams that have been broken by snow/ice berms, plastic motorcycle airboxes, fenders etc, with this stuff and it never comes apart again.

Comes in Grey (almost black) and white. Use and mix it precisely as instructed and once dry you can sand and paint it if needed.

I just dug out my 10 year old kit last week to patch a plastic Volvo air diverter for my 740. It's the part that directs air from the slots in the chin spoiler to the radiator. I found it in a salvage yard with a couple of cracks. Not any more!

    Good luck,

Crucial, Thanks Erwin. Unfortunately, here in Northern VA its not going to be more than 55*F for any 24 hour period anytime soon.

Tell me about it, look at all that snow outside!

Just FYI, West Marine is a boat supply store in Alexandria (south of old town), you can get the stuff. However, I suggest that you patch the crack from the back side of the spoiler with fiberglass and epoxy. This is the same stuff used to build some experimental airplanes, it will prevent the crack from re-appearing if you do it right.

West Marine sells "WEST EPOXY SYSTEMS," probably no relationship to the store's name... But what you need is a small jar of the 206 Fast Hardener ,a can of resin, and a piece of fiberglass faberic. All of the above are on the shelf at the rear center part of the store. Total cost of this repair should not be more than $40

Read the instructions on the bottle, but basically you mix the two solutions in something like a 5 epoxy-1 hardner ratio, you only need mix enough to fill half a coffee cup. After stirring the mixed solution for two minutes you then apply it with a brush to a piece of fiberglass faberic placed behind the cracked area. You probably need to put down 5 layers for strength. Make sure you clean the spoiler with alcohol before starting the project. You also need at least 50'F air temperature, otherwise the epoxy will not cure. You can use a heater/ hair dryer inside the garage but don't over heat it past 70F, or you'll just have to wait til the weather to warm up.
