Engine Toast?

AAARRRRGGGG...

How do I put this??? I had the oil drained in my back yard after warming it to heat the oil for 5-10 min to thin it out and get a good drain. The plug was out, filter out and must have been bone dry. Stupid me did not tell the wife and I was on the phone for 30 min. In the mean time my wife had engaged the remote start to go to the store and it must have run for 5 min or so before I noticed. (The car was still running). It did not seize and the check engine light was on. I put in 6 litres and reinstalled new filter and after a while I started the car. It seems to run fine. Should I be worried that something could break in the near future. What items should be checked?

Thanks.

    Engine Toast?

Do you mean the "Check Engine" light or the "Oil Pressure" light? Because if it's the oil pressure light and it's still on the engine is probably in sad shape.

You never drain all of the oil out of an engine with an oil change so there was some still in there. They DO show running an engine without any oil on those after-midnight infomercials so if you use synthetic oil it's possible that the engine wasn't destroyed.

Also, if it was just idling there was no LOAD on the engine. (Let's look at the factors optimistically!)

I'd check the oil pressure with a gauge. If the engine still builds normal oil pressure I'd just drive it. Maybe not across the entire country but what can you lose at this point?

Was it synthetic oil? I'd think that might have a chance at working
as long as there was some oil on the "parts" with no damage.

      Thanks again,

Yes the oil has always been synthetic. I drove it yesterday and today and everything seems good. Idles well etc. There was no oil light, it was for sure the lamda light? It is still on, and has only been on once before (ECT sensor or something a while back)
      Hopefully it will be alright.

Ps. Thank god for the all round incl rear full time running lights. That's what initially caught my attention.

I tend to agree. A five minute run, at idle with no load is unlikely to have caused severe damage.

Had the car actually been driven, it would have been a much sadder outcome.

      Good luck on this one.
