Advice on buying a 98 V70 or a 98 V-90 V70-XC70

Have done some research on the FWD GLT 98 V-70 but very little on the RWD V-90 because there is not much out there. Are there serious problems associated with either car that would make my decision easier? The GLT V-70 is around 200 horse, ditto the six cylinder V-90. Which engine is the most trouble-free? You can't slip a feeler gauge into the V-70 compartment, and the V-90 engine compartment isn't much better. But still, a RWD is a lot easier to work on than a FWD. But, there are very few wrecked V-90's out there compared to V-70's when it comes to getting parts, and, the V-90 gets poorer mileage. I plan on keeping the car for at least ten years. Some good advice, please.

1999 V-90's are pretty good from what I've seen. As long as RWD is ok for your situation.

If you have a choice on the V-70, go for a 1999 or 2000 instead of a 98. Many of the 98 bugs are worked out, or at least better, on the 99's and 00's.

I own both. We have a 2000 V70 AWD, a 92 960 wagon and a 97 S90. Check out the Brickboard's RWD forum for the 900 and S90/V90 FAQ's and archives. The RWD for 900's is quite active and you will find distinct opinions about both sides of the issues. The 960 RWD series is a very comfortable road car. If you or your family has a tendancy to speed there may be a problem. This car will go all day long at 80mph with 24 to 25 mpg. It does require more maintenance than previous Volvo's. It may also require that you take the vehicle to a qualified mechanic or the dealer for repairs you might otherwise be able to have done by yourself on other vehicles. Knowing when the timing belt has been changed is an absolute must on the 960's. The 98's have a 70K interval but if the car has low mileage you may run into a 5 or 6 yr change interval before you reach the mileage. Pose your question on the RWD forum and you should get anywhere from 5 to 15 responses. I am sure the search will be educational. I am happy to have my youngest daughter driving the 960 wagon. She doesn't have a lead foot and she probably needs the most protection. If something happened to the 92 wagon, I am sure I would look for a good used V90.

I would like to get the V-90 for my sister (she's 67). I tried tempting her with an 850 or V-70, but she objected to the wide corner posts in the wagon version of both vehicles, which made backing up difficult for her. I sat in a V-90 once, but I didn't think to look in the rear view mirror for backup visibility. Is the buv in the V-90 significantly better than in the V-70's?
