molding on top of car coming off 850 1994

The molding on the top of my car is coming on in pieces. This the molding that looks like plastic tape. I understand the replacement molding is like $150 per side. Is there a way to take off the rest without scratching the car? I was thinking of painting over the metal that is exposed with black paint.

    There is no easy way to remove this loose black film. It tends to peel in some areas and stays glued down in other areas. I used a dremmel tool with a wire wheel type of bit to remove the loose areas then taped off the roof and sprayed it with satin finish black spray paint. It has held up pretty well for over a year now.
