Self Cracking Windshield C70 2002

I am just getting ready to have my windshield replaced for the second time.

Last fall when the weather got cold, the windshield cracked starting under the passenger side molding, at the door post, about 4 inches below the roof. I waited about two days before I went to the dealer, and by then the crack had run about 5 inches horizontally toward the middle of the windshield. The dealer claimed "I must have been hit by a stone" and I will admit that about 4 inches along the crack, it had changed directions and looked like a stone stike.

Last week the windshield cracked in the same way, at almost the same location, but on the driver's side. This time I was smart enough to drive stright to the dealer when the crack was still about 1 inch long. Now I am in a fight between the dealer and the glass company they recommended.

I saw some leaky windshield complaints, but has anybody else heard of glass cracking like this on a C70?

Hey.. I have an update on this situation. I got my windshield replaced at no cost to me. I don't know if the dealership or the dealer "recommended" glass company paid for the new windshield, it is fixed now. When they pulled the old windshield out they checked to see if there might be any flaws in the frame that might cause the problem, and the best they could figure is that the glue was applied too heavily. As the urethane (I think this was the type of glue) glue dries it shrinks and puts stress on the glass.

    Thanks,
    Dan

Not at all unusual for S70/C70 models. I've read several similar conmplaints posted here and on VVspy. My 1998 S70 windshield began to crack in a manner similar to what you described, approximately 2 years after delivery. Volvo, of course, ruled it had been struck by some invisible force that left to mark (Nordic cosmic rays?). Two independent glass shops inpected the crack, and gave me opinions in writing that it was a stress crack that originated at an edge defect. I had one of them replace it ($225), and went to Small Claims Court armed with the two written opinions of experts. Volvo never bothered to show up to defend their position, so I won by default.

My C70 coupe had a crack along the base of the windshield when I bought it. I didn't see it at the time, it's kinda hidden by the wipers and is not really visible while driving.

My theory is that there a degree of chassis flex in the C70 that is not present in the S/V70. Is your car a convertible? If so, there is likely to be more flex.

Sometimes the windshield ends up carrying a bit of a load around the edges, it's not isolated by the frame. Pretty common in American cars, I see cracks like it on them a lot.

I would add a strut brace and see if that changes anything. Also, was OEM VOlvo glass installed? Sometimes aftermarket glass is inferior.

Yes, The car is a convertible, but I have owned various convertibles for 20+ years and never had a problem like this.

When the glass was replaced it was Volvo glass. So I don't think quality should be a problem.

The car has never been in an accident, so nothing there.

The dealer and the glass repair company are supposed to look at it today and "decide" what might be at fault.

      Thanks for the feedback...
