850 Engine Compatibility 850

I have a 1993 10 valve 2.5L 850 sedan. It needs new rings ΐ cylinders are down to 100psi]. I am looking at a second hand engine from a dismantled vehicle.

I can get a 20 valve 2.5 850 engine from 1995.

What issues would I face replacing the 10 valve engine? Will it slot right in? Will I need to change the fuel/ignition ECU?

Any other traps or should I stick to the 10 valve?

I don't need the extra power of the 20 valve [I have a V70, so I know the difference], it's a question of availability and price of replacement motors.

Cheers,
Dave Kerr

I would think that the same rules that apply to computer software apply here, that is, widget made in 2000 can be made to fit something in 2002, but not the other way around.

I also imagine that you could fit an Aston Martin engine into a Vet if you truly wanted to do so.

      Hm,

I'm not trying to fit an Aston Martin engine!

I thought that 850 engines 1992-1997 were all extremely similar [apart from bore, number of valves, turbo or none].

So, I'm wondering if anyone knows if I can unbolt a 10 valve non turbo 2.5 from my 1993 850 sedan and bolt back in a 20 valve non turbo 2.5 within that same date range? I'm not worried about engine accessories- rather, the big things like will the tranny fit, the engine mounts etc? I am assuming the ECU would go with the engine type as the extra valves would affect required mixture ratios etc etc.

What should I look out for? Anyone done it?

The alternative is to recondition the engine myself. I have done the heads on a V6 265 and have fully reconditioned older engines 10+ years ago. Anyone who has done an 850 [top and bottom end] who is prepared to comment on how much time it took them?

      Cheers,
      Dave

If you've done the work before then if you have the time thats the best solution. Rebuilt it yourself. An engine block has no electronics and is pretty much the same on any type of vehicle. Some use better parts than others.
If I was you then spend some time and replace the rings and seals yourself especially since you already know how to do it. You'll save 2G's.
Plus you know it was done properly.

you will probably also need to replace the ECU with the one from the 20 valve, also may have to do some wiring. the engine itself will fit right in, how about putting the 10 valve head on the good 20v motor block and installing it that way? the head should also bolt right on I would think, but you will have to change the timing belt back to the 10v configuration.

just an idea, hope it helps.

        Dan
