Seeking specific obd code to reset service reminder light V70-XC70 1998

Hello Everyone:

This problem has me stumped. The '98 V/S70s (and some 850s, I've read) have
the unfortunate characteristic that the service reminder light *can only*
be reset through the ODB-2 interface using Volvo-specific codes. Now,
I have ELM32x-based scantool (hooks up to a laptop) that I have been
using to troubleshoot DTCs and it works like a champ and I really
like it. But as is, it is of no use in resetting the service lamp.
From the many posting I read from this list and elsewhere, I have
learned that this is because the reset is done with a vendor-specific
message and neither Volvo nor any of the third-party auto test
equipment companies are going to publish this information.

I'm certain that somewhere out there is a fellow OBD-2 enthusiast
that's in the same boat I'm in and has already figured out
the code(s) necessary to reset the service light on the affected
Volvo 850/s70/v70s. I know that Mr. Peper (a frequent poster on OBD topics)
knows the answer to my question because he added this feature to his
OBD browser software a few years ago.

So, I hoping that Mr. Peper or someone else who's been down this
road before is feeling generous and will share this information. If
you do, you will be answering one of the more frequently asked
questions there is on the Volvo forums.

Much Thanks,

Robert Miller

I too have a '98. The Service Interval lamp issue is rather pathetic.
SamuraiJack had the best answer, which he posted some time ago: get a piece
of 3M electrical tape, and use that.

    Have you tried this?

    1. Turn Ignition Key to position I (off)

    2. Press and hold the trip mileage button

    3. Turn Ignition Key to position II

    4. Continue holding trip mileage button for about 10 seconds

    5. On the second flash release the trip mileage button

Others have said it more simply...press the odometer reset button, while moving the keyswitch from I to II.

Don't know if this applies to your model, but it might.

If not, you might try calling IPD and asking them. They do sell a tool (very pricey...$178 just for this purpose for 850 and 70s from '96 to '98) but they may be able/willing to give you the code for your OBD tool. Their number is 1-800-444-6473 and they are open from 8:30 to 5:00 PST.

      Dear MadeInJapan:

Thanks, but unless you have a '98 v70 or a '97 850 you can't really believe that there isn't any way to reset the light other than thru the OBD-II port, but there isn't. All those push-the-button-turn-the-key procedures don't do a thing.

I know thst there are gizmos available in the $150 and up range that do this. But I already have a programmable OBD-II interface ($60, scantool.net) that capable of doing it if I just knew the right code(s).

So, I'm going to keep asking and looking cause I know that there's another Volvo-owning OBD'er out there who's come up against this. And together, were going to figure it out.

      Cheers,

      Robert Miller

I think you are out of luck. I have watched the Volvo dealer reset the light on my 98 V70. They did not use their scan tool. They used a specific handheld unit that is used for solely turning off the light. I have, however, had success with turning off the engine light with the procedure listed above.

Did the unit plug into the OBDII port under the center console?
I'm just wondering if the initial premise that it is done
through the OBDII port is correct.

            Hello Ray and others,

I'd say I'm about 95% sure that it is done thru the OBDII port as I described earlier and I'll tell you why. Reseting the service reminder (the SRI) is an issue that bubbles up here and on other Volvo forums every so often. At those times, many posting appear and the procedures are told and retold about clearing the light for newer volvos (using the trip odom. and ign. switch) and for older OBD1-equipped vehicles (pressing some buttons on the ECU under the hood). However, many posters here have said that '96-'97 850s and '98 70-series owners are screwed because there is NO way to do it other than with a dealer scan tool thru the diagnostic connector.

Also there were a number of specific exchanges on this forum about five years ago between Leo Montreuil and Alex C. Peper on this exact topic (check the archives). If you read these postings they leave little doubt that it's done thru the OBD port (although they don't actually give the detailed codes and messages.) Alex Peper went on to release his own OBDII scanner software (avail. at www.obd-2.com) that includes the feature to reset the SRI on the affected volvos.

Several people have written to me in private to say that it was their impression that the codes were obtained with the use of a logical analyser (i.e. a sniffer) since Volvo wasn't about to release the information.

Well, that's more than you probably wanted to know. But, that's why I think I'm on the right track. I'll end with my usual appeal...

I'm certain that somewhere out there is a fellow OBDII enthusiast
that's in the same boat I'm in and has already figured out
the code(s) necessary to reset the service light on the affected

              Robert,
I agree...this information should be free for all who want to know...it's a shame that Volvo wants to keep screwing you even after you own the vehicle for year. Good luck for your search. I'll look around too and if I find something I'll let you know.
