Hood won't open, latch appears fine...help! 850

A few weeks ago, I went to pop the hood. Double click, seemed fine, then I couldn't get the latch to operate and the hood wouldn't open.

Today I take the car in and my mechanic gets the hood open only to find the part is perfectly fine. It seems as though it gets stuck in the plastic cowl. I can't figure it out. Nothing has changed, and suddenly the damn thing won't work properly. The latch is only 9 months old. I don't believe the car was hit in the front recently either.

Anyone else have this problem? Thanks in advance.

mine got 'sticky' sprayed motorcycle chain grease (its sprayable, sets gloopy nad wash resistant...) into BOTH releases all the pivots on the centre pull and the 'hook' of the metal hook that goes onto the plastic cowl..then worked the hook on the cowl a bit and sprayedsome more on there (sort of on the top of the hook where it interfaces with the cowl)..

now it 'springs' open very easily indeed!

also if its the opposite catch to the pull handle that is giving problems just pull the handle again....

I have also had this problem. To originally open the hood after this problem i used a long and skinny screwdriver to push the metal part in the hood latch mechanism so that i didn't break it. After all of this i found that the only solution was to close the hood gently because the latch part was getting stuck in the plastic cowl. And i can assume we all prob got into this habbit of slamming hoods from earlier model Volvos. I hope that could possibly help.

I think that there are two latches on your hood, one on each side.

The plastic pull in the middle is a safety hook that is supposed to hold your hood down if the latches fail or you pull the release while driving. Pushing the hood down slightly may make this hook easier to pull.

Do both sides of the hood rise when you pull the inside release? one side should rise as each click is heard. I had to add a spacer to the cross cable on one of our cars. I read that there is a cable adjustment on the cabin end of the release cable.

There is a hood latch section in Volvospeed's repair section.

Similar thing happened to me. The plastic pull that pokes out the grill would not poke out. Try greasing the part where the latch hits the cowl. If I remember right it's plastic on plastic. Also lube the other parts of the latch as they need lubrication as well.
