Timing belt tensioner tool S70 1998

Hello Everyone!

I am wondering if anyone has any experience with the timing belt tensioner for an S70. The tensioner is hydraulic, and must be compressed and locked in place with a pin before re-installing the timing belt. Volvo's manual says that one must use a special tool to do this. I wonder if a large C-clamp would do the same job. Does anyone know if what I propose is possible?
Thanks for any help/advice you may have for me!
Carl

    See the instructions at:

    http://www.volvospeed.com/maintence.htm

includes the info on how to compress the tensioner using a vice
(and a slow hand; it takes 5 to 10 minuets).

      Thanks! S70 1998

Hey thanks Ray N! That was very helpful. I don't want to buy any more "special tools" than I absolutely have to.

No, I am not positive if it is a hydraulic tensioner yet. I have to call the dealership about that today. I am just trying to cover all my bases and get a feel for what I will/might need to do the job. Apparently, there were two types of tensioners used in that year, switching after #1266127. If it is in fact a mechanical tensioner, I obviously won't need to worry about compressing the hydraulic unit, but instead will have to see about the crankshaft counter-hold tool. I have one for Honda, but doubt that it will work on the Volvo.
      Fun fun!
