I would like to eliminate my A/C.
Does anyone know what serpentine belt to use.
Volvo does not have a specific 850 non A/C belt.
But if people are racing these cars. I have to assume they are running without A/C.

You may have to end up going to a Non-OEM belt. Take twine and wrap it around were the surpentine belt would go, and measure the twine. A parts store will need the length and width of the belt, and they come in just about any size you can imagine. I had to do it to a Ford (is that word allowed here) I owned once, thats how I know they make them by size, and not specific to each vehicle.

I speak Ford and even own one, although little of it's exactly original OEM.
I too have done the string method for sizing serp belts when changing pulleys (underdrives) but if one does that, best to get 2-3 in the close size range (returning those not needed) as otherwise you'll be making several trips.

Why are you "hoping to remove it?"

As Frank said, it doesn't do any harm to keep it in place.

If you ever sell this car, its one thing if the A/C doesn't work. It's a completely different issue when half the parts of the A/C system are missing and your prospective buyer turns down the sale 'cause all those little clips, and hangers and brackets that you threw away will cost a thousand dollars to replace. At least, if you leave everything in place, someone can repair the A/C using standard replacement parts.

In the early '80s, I made the same mistake with an early Honday Accord I owned.

Not only that but I too have once removed AC on an older car (same "reasoning") only to accomplish nothing in performance gain from less weight. I had that car for 12 yrs and later re-adding AC (had to rob all the parts, ALL AC parts mind you) from another old car as I missed the AC in hot weather.
My 19 yr old son has also removed a working AC system from one of his cars, not listening to "the old man" who told him not to.....accomplished nothing in performance.

Now, my 400HP 'stang HAS AC because I re-added it (previous owner removed it) because I like AC in summer and with the AC off, having the parts sitting there hurts nothing. The added 30 lbs isn't a problem.

850s are not what I'd consider to be a good "race car" by any means BUT if weight is the issue, the AC system doesn't really weigh THAT much and it's weight won't make any real difference. The AC compressor pulley doesn't rob measureable HP either with the AC off.
The ONLY good reason IMO why anyone might want to remove the AC compressor is if the unit was siezed otherwise it's not worth the hassle.

I assume the issue is weight? Otherwise, I can imagine an open-clutch compressor only draining a tiny fraction of a horsepower.

Maybe you could contact IPD. They sell bypass belts for RWD volvos and may have a clue as to which one to use for 850 bypassing.

The AC compressor bearing in my '95 850 Turbo is in danger of seizing and I'd like to be able to disconnect it altogether (I don't need A/C where I live). So I'm interested in an answer to this question as well.
