Smoke from vents, and windows fog up. 850

Hello, for the past few months I have noticed that smoke/dust occasionally exits the front vents and the windows and windshield fog up a bit. I believe it may be related to the fact that the passenger side "de-fogger" doesn't seem to work while it clears up the driver's side fine thank god. Does anyone have any experience with this? Thank you.

Though one is tempted to suspect the infamous evaporator (big job) or heater core (much easier), the fact that the problem occurs on only one side makes me suggest a look at the ductwork under the dash. Passenger side is probably pretty easy to get at - drop the glovebox out of the dash and see if there's a blockage or if it's somehow come apart.

Does it happen when the heater is off? (would indicate possible heater core problem.) When the a/c or defroster is on? (indicative of an evaporator problem). Try all combinations.

Does it smell like burning coolant? Do you need to re-fill your coolant on a regular basis? If so, it may be your heater core.

It doesn't seem to have too much of a smell to it. I did have to refll my coolant a little while ago,and the volvo dealership did it for me free of charge. The guy topped off the coolant pretty lazily and spilled some around the coolant tank, I wanted to smack the guy for being so careless. But the smoke started before that, the same exact time I noticed the passenger side window not clearing up when the de-humidifier is put on. Now that I come to think of it the first time I noticed the smoke, the onlt thing I could see under the hood was coolant stains around the tank, which is on the passenger side. Could the coolant have spilled on something and been burned and the smoke enter the vents?

Don't know, as I am not a DYI. But when my heater core went, I was topping off the coolant every other day. And the smoke reeked. It wasn;t a tough diagnosis.

Possibly your ac evaporator leaking- the smoke is perhaps R134a leaking out.
