Brake Pad Recommendations? V70-XC70 1999

At 43,000 miles, my 99 V70 T5M is ready for new brake pads.

www.ips-parts.com has quite a selection of front pads, all priced between $30.83 and $47.82 (front) or $18.65 to $25.77 (rear).

What they list is:
PBR Deluxe
PBR Metal Master
Dan-Block
Textar

Can anyone share experiences with these brands? My priorities are:
1. Quiet
2. Life span

The original pads have been satisfactory as far as braking performance, so I'm not looking for something higher performance than original.

Anyone who has bought Volvo branded pads from one of the discount mail-order Volvo parts guys know how much they cost?

I have some very strong opinions on this matter. Enough so that I put them into web pages. Go here:

and see the two pages related to PBR Deluxe Brake Pads and EBC Green Stuff Brake Pads.

      Brake Pad Recommendations? V70-XC70 1999

I've used both OEM and Textar pads on my 1998 V70R, and they're comparable. The place that sold me the textars claimed that textar is one of the OEMs for Volvo (Dan-Block being another), and looking at them I'd believe it. The textar's lack the chamfering on the edges that the OE pads have, but that didn't cause any problems with "singing" for me.

Question for Jim: do the Green Stuff folks make a rear pad, too? In my R with AWD, I like to have balanced materials fore and aft. Also, did you change rotors at the same time, or do anything to your rotors? In previous lives, I've experienced problems changing pad material when the rotor had been seasoned with another material, and I was curious if you did anything with that.

      Thanks!
      -cj

"Do the Green Stuff folks make a rear pad, too?"

I'm sure they do, but I didn't even look into it. You could check Tire Rack's web site. But honestly, the performance of the Green Stuff is so similar to the stock pads that I wouldn't bother changing them for the sake of brake balancing. And it's not as though I'm not aware of such issues, after several years of autocross and track time with other vehicles.

BTW, I'm about to change the write up that I did of the Green Stuff. After washing my car last night, I now see that they are not "dustless," and the dust that they do produce is not as light as the nearly white, asbestos-laden dust in the PBRs. But they are still a marked improvement over the stock pads. The wheels still look clean, even after driving home from the car wash. :)

"Did you change rotors at the same time, or do anything to your rotors?"

When I put the PBRs on, I did not change the rotors. Still, after nearly 5k miles of (mostly dry) driving on them, that shouldn't have been an issue.

When I put the Green Stuff on, I did change the rotors, though.

We've put over 250,000 miles on 7 Volvos. Always used Volvo pads and dealer techs, never had any noise or problems.

As far as I am concerned, why change? Even the most expensive OEM price is a reasonable value in brakes.

If you try a few of the advertisers on this site or Groton, I'm sure you can find a good price on OEM pads.

I recently repaced my front pads on my 2000 XCSE using PBR Deluxe and am very satisfied. The metallic one I'm told are for very agressive braking. I am about to replace the brakes on my 98 V70 and will use PBR Deluxe. I purchased them from IPD in Portland.

I am a big fan of the PBR Pads! NO dust on my 17's!!!! Great braking! With CD rotors, a big improvement over stock.

I killed the factory braking when I had to rush to the hospital..... SO much fade, I needed hundreds of feet to stop! It was 130+ for 8 miles with hard braking as needed....

I firmly believe the PBR's and CD rotors would not let me down in the future.... hopefully not needed again tho!

      Mike
