Buying an automatic transmission for a 1994 850 T-5 850

Hi, I'm in the process of fixing my 1994 850 T-5 Sedan, which suffered massive failure recently, when the transmission cracked in a number of places simultaneously. This was partially due to the 138,000 miles, 3 previous owners (one of which I know "dropped" the tranny from Neutral (revved up) into drive, causing massive dammage to the transmission in the process) and partially due to my fairly agressive driving habits. Long story short, I need a new (or remanufactured) transmission for my car. The Volvo Dealer in Eugene, Oregon quoted me $3500 to replace the transmission. An independent volvo shop in town quoted me $3100, taking into account that there would be no core refund (since the core of the transmission on the car is useless).

My most important question is this:

How much should I pay for 1.) a new transmission, without core refund. 2.) a factory? rebuilt transmission, also without core refund?

My secondary question, (and this one's out there): Is it reasonably possible to install a manual transmission in my car instead? I know that 850T-5R models were produced with manual transmissions, and they are FWD with the same motor (only slightly modified). Would it be possible to swap an 850T-5R transmission into the car? And, would that require replacing/modifying the ECU? or does the ECU not have any control over the transmission (and would thus be unaffected by a transmission swap)?

I know, I'm asking quite a few involved questions in one short post, without much background information; but I have faith in brickboard's expertise! Let me know what you think, and I'll be checking for replies.

In my recent research for a re-man trans myself I found that most people will
agree that it usually takes 10 hours total labor, 5 on each end, to remove the old and install the new (re-man). That would amount to $850 at my local, friendly Volvo dealer at $85/hr. labor rate.
The dealer's price for a Volvo re-maufactured AT should run anywhere from $1600 to $1800. Add it all up and you have got approx. $2650.
Your $3500 estimate sounds a bit high. Even your Indy shop sounds high.
On another recent post, someone also stated that it might be better to go with the Volvo re-man, as they give you a 12 month/12,000 mile warranty against any failure.

P.S. Other folks here on the board also suggested to me that while you have the
transmission off be sure and replace the main seal (inexpensive now,
    expensive later).

Have you considered buying a used transmission from a wreck? The AWs are pretty robust if you change the fluid, there must be piles of them around.

The Turbo 850s were available with a 5-speed in the rest of the world, including Canada. The SVC70 (essentially the same car as the 850) also was even in the US. However, the engine electronics differ between roughly grouped "early" MY 1993-1995 and 1996-1998 and again 1999- "late", and the ECU differs between the ATs and Manuals. I'm sure this can be done, but seems an interesting challenge, please keep us posted!
