fuel mileage V70-XC70 1998

What would affect fuel mileage on a 98 V70? I can only get about 26 mpg on the highway and previously was geting 30mpg. Tires are inflated properly and the ambient temp was around 60 degrees.

My air pump runs but is rather loud and will run more hatn just at start up.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Might want to check your thermostat. I was getting 17 mpg (city) and heater was weak, but temp gauge was still in normal range. Changed out the thermostat and mileage immediately went up to 20-21 mpg. Heater works fine now too.

I had same problem o my V40 00, bad thermostat, normal temperature readings on gage. Finally on a -10F night it caused a Check Engine alarm, reading engine temperature low. My MPG went back to normal.

Hi.

My 98 AWD is getting 28.5 at 75-80 MPH, and somewhere around 20 in town. AZ freeways are posted at 75 MPH.

I noticed that my air pump only runs on very cold days, and only for a few minutes, and only on the first startup of the day. If yours is running longer and more often, this may be a sign of problems, any of which could affect your mileage.

There have been many threads about bad air pumps, plugged air pumps, etc. In fact, mine was replaced for excessive noise at 80,000 miles under my extended warranty. I did notice a drop in mileage before it was replaced...

Good luck.
