Speaker out 850 1993

I recently had my stock Volvo stereo replaced with a pioneer CD in dash. I was in the back seat (for the first time since I had the stereo replaced) and noticed that the left rear (when facing the car) speaker does not work. I am talking about the one(s) above the trunk. There is no static, nothing, so I don't think it was blown. My question: Is this a connection issue in that the folks who installed the new stereo did not connect that one in particular (or are there individual connections at all)? I tried to pull the speaker guard off but was unsuccessful. I am not an electronic specialist so unless there is just a loose wire, I'd be at a loss. Should I take it back to the installer? It's been several months since it was put in. There are no other problems with the speakers--it's mate works just fine as do the other 6.

Regards. . .

In my '95 those speakers (and rear door speakers)are 8 Ohms I was told by a couple of installers that it had to be replaced w/ another 8 Ohm speaker otherwise you can blow uot the radio.

Other installers said it is OK to use 4Ohm speaker.
There are no 8 Ohm after market speakers.

Most likely one of the magnets fell off and became stuck to the other one. It's pretty easy to remove the rear deck speakers. You need to access the screws that hold the speaker cover in place via the trunk. After you remove the speaker grill it's easy to remove the speaker and disconnect the wire connectors. I had the same problem with the speaker and found the loose magnet, apparently this is common for these speakers. I just used some epoxy and glued it back into place. It's been okay for >2 years now.

I am a neophite when it comes to this. Will it be clear that there is a loose magnet and where I should reattach it? Once I remove the grill do I operate from the trunk? Your response is greatly appreciated.

        1. Once you remove the retaining screws/nuts for the speaker grill from the trunk, go to your back seat and lift the grill off.

        2. From the back seat you can remove the speaker, I can't remember if there were screws holding the speaker in place but it should be an easy process to remove those.

        3. Once you pull the speaker out, you can disconnect the speaker wire plug. You don't need to cut the wires.

        4. Now that you have the speaker out, you will see 2 speaker cones. The smaller speaker cone is either the midrange or tweeter and the larger speaker is the bass. Behind each of the speaker cones are round magnets. The smaller one is most likely the one that came loose; it usually falls into the larger cone since the larger magnet attracted it.

        5. Just get some epoxy and glue the smaller magnet back into it's holder behind the tweeter/midrange cone. If you examine your other rear speaker (the one that works), you'll see exactly where it belongs.

Good luck and let us know what happens.

I have an 850 GLT and my rear speakers quit as well. I understand that the GLT radio (SC811?) has a separate amplifier sits under the steering column and drives the rear speakers. The dealer wanted close to $500-$600 for the amp so I asked them to go take a hike!

I believe, if you hook up with a good radio installer who is familiar with Volvos, you may be able to either ensure that your new unit is connected to the amp, or you may have to replace the amp with an after-market unit.

Hope this helps - all the best!!!

Thanks for the advice... One thing though, the other one works just fine, so at least one must be connected. Maybe they just didn't connect the other one?

Check if bad speaker 850 1993

Easy way to check if the "no-sound channel" speaker is good or not,

Disconnect wire going to "no-sound speaker" end.
Disconnect wire going to the "sound speaker" end and connect that pair wire to the "no-sound speaker" end.

          replace both speakers. 850 1994

The rear deck speakers are a 2-way system composed of 2 speakers in each separate box above the trunk. My right rear speaker "went out" and I unhooked it and plugged it to another system and discovered that the tweeter in the box was working, but not the larger cone. When in the car, you can barely hear the tweeter, so it sounds like it's not working at all. I plan on replacing both of the rear trunk speakers sometime, I'm sure that will remedy the problem. Volvo speakers are known to have problems with the magnets, etc.
