Hey I would like to find a cheap way to program a new key and an extra remote for my 2001 S40. Dealer wants over $100 for just the software for the key and an extra $25 for the remote. Thats not labor. Is it true that Volvo cars keeps total control over the distribution of keys and immobilizer codes and the car must be hooked to a central computer to receive the new codes?

Hey, I just bought a new key & remote for my 2000 S40. Here's what it cost:

Key : approx. $40. Must be bought from dealer.
Remote : bought off of eBay for $15 including shipping. Dealer wanted over $100
Software : approx. $35 for key & $35 for remote. Must be bought from dealer.
Labor : 1/2 hour for key & 1/2 hour for remote. Labor rate: $70/hour.

It ain't cheap but at least eBay will save you $$$ on the remote. Just make sure the numbers on the back of the remote match your existing remote.

I purchased 2 remote entry devices for my '00 S40 on Ebay for $10. One dealer wanted $120 to do the programming. A second dealer did the work for $70. The programming must be done at a Volvo dealership. Shop around.

100 for software? Last time I checked, software for keys and remotes were the same price, around $25 each. Aprox .6 hours labor is a fair charge for labor. If there is more than 1 dealer in your area, shop around.

Sorry but their is no other way other than having your dealer do it through Vadis, the dealers PC cart and SW program that was made for all '99 on up Volvos.
