Manual Transmission Fluid (M56) 850

Car is a '96 850 w/5spd.. Believe it is the M56 model transmission.

Anyways, I'm getting ready to go through the car and change everything out. Looked at the owners manual (and Haynes manual), and all it says is to use Volvo synthetic transmission fluid.

I posted this message before, but got few replys. Heard that I can run a 5w-30 synthetc motor oil, but that doesn't seem like the best thing to do.

Thanks for any replys,

Justin.

    Manual Transmission Fluid (M56) 850

I've tried Valvoline fully synthetic in my '99 S70, and didn't like it. Shift quality was abysmal.

Switched to Redline MTL and shift quality went back to, or maybe even very slightly better than, that from Volvo's own synthetic fluid.

I purchased the MTL from http://www.summitracing.com/. Dealer price on the Volvo fluid is about the same. At that point, it's a toss up between visiting your local dealer and clicking away on a web site.

Lastly, make a point of visiting Redline Oil's web site, http://www.redlineoil.com/. Lots of useful information about gear oils and transmission fluids.

    Hope that helps.

    Manual Transmission Fluid (M56) V70-XC70 2001

I have a 2001 V70-T5 with a manual transmission. I have tried and tried to find someone who will tell exactly what Volvo recommends and can only get a Volvo part number.

On a side note the newer manual transmissions are apparently built with tighter tolerances and most use engine oil now. I also have a 1995 Dodge Truck. I just put in Amsoil 0W-30. They recommend 5W-30, but said 0W-30 would obviously be better.

    Hope that helps!
