V70 AWD Turbo replacement V70-XC70

Our 1998 V70 AWD has 100k and I was told by our mechanic that the turbo is leaking and needs to be replaced. $1,000 parts and labor.

How difficult is this process and does anyone recommend a reconditioned turbo to save $$$? Are service manuals available online?
Thanks for the assistance.

Turbo failure is very rare. Oil leaks from the oil
return line is very, very common. I'd have the return
line checked first (it is a 99 cent gasket that leaks).
The bad news is replacement of the gasket is difficult
on AWD models (compared to FWD models).

This site has the details:

Before replacing the turbo you should get another
opinion.

Is that 100K miles or km? Is this the loe pressure turbo or do you have a V70R?

THE USUAL INDICATIONS THAT YOU HAVE A FAILED OIL SEAL IN YOUR TURBO IS, BLUE SMOKE FROM YOUR EXHAUST APON START UP OR HEAVY ACCELERATION. HAVE THE MECHANIC GIVE A MORE DETAILED DISCRIPTION OF WHY HE THINKS IT IS FAULTY. MAKE HIM PROVE HIS CASE. AN EXTERNAL OIL LEAK IS NOT USUALLY ASSOCIATED WITH A FAILED TURBO. I AM A DIESEL TECH. AND REPLACE TURBOS OFTEN ALL OF THEM REMANS. IF YOU BUY A REBUILT TURBO SEE WHAT THE WARRENTY IS FIRST. AS FAR AS DOING IT YOURSELF, DO YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE DOING IT? IT IS PRETTY STAIGHT FORWARD. BUT IT DEPENDS ON YOUR ABILITY. GOOD LUCK
