Seat warmer problem - need help 850 1995

I have a Canadian model 850 GLE with front heated seats. For the past 2 years, the seat warmer on the driver's side was not working. I found this forum (several suggestions were posted) and I decided to have a go at repairing it myself.

I saw two wires, one red and the other white inserted under the seat. I gave a slight tug and the white wire popped out. I reached underneath and felt some foam with a 2 inch hole. The red wire was still connected and I pulled it out. This red wire ended in a terminal plug (a lug with a plastic casing). I found out that the white wire had broken off from its conector. I soldered the end of the white wire back onto its connector. I checked that there was current to the wires by turning the engine on, and then switching the heat warmer on (orange light lit up)and then with a voltmeter which gave a reading of 14 volts.

The problem is now when I plug it back in, how will I know if I have it with the polarity reversed? After all I had to blindly plug it back in; I had not removed the seat. Do I have to pull out more stuff and is it safe to do so in order to connect the wires back? Will it work when the polarity is reversed or will there be damage?

Thanks. Charles

Sounds like you didn't remove the thermostat. If you reach in there you should be able to remove it. Not sure about the polarity thing though. Good luck.

Here in the US there's a recall on the heaters. Don't know if its the same in Canada, but may be worth having the dealer look at it.

      Seat warmer problem - Solved! 850 1995

In Canada we have a recall notice only on the 1996 models. Anyways, I'm happy to announce that I've fixed the seat warmer problem. The first time I plugged the connectors back in, it didn't work. I was lucky that nothing got damaged. You should feel the heat after 5-7 minutes after switching it on. The second time I had the red wire plugged into the window side (driver's seat)and the white wire (actually it is striped red and white)towards the passenger side. I first checked out the passenger seat which was working; it had the red wire on the passenger side and the white one facng the window.

Thanks to everyone for their help.

      Charles

    Hi Charles,

As far as I remember, the red wire goes to the connector that is towards the front of the car and the white/red wire goes to the connector that is towards the rear. I might be wrong, so it is best to wait for more input on this.
If the other one works, why don't you check the connections?

    Ihsan
