tire replacements V70-XC70 2001

I drive a V70 2001 2.4 NON-turbo wagon....I had to replace the rear passenger side tire due to road hazard...my question is must I also have to replace the rear driver side tire as well?...the other tires have 20,000 miles on them each and came from the factory....a Volvo mechanic said nay since the bevel?problem has been resolved and you do not have to change 2 tires at a time...but does this pertain to the 2001 V70 as well or only to the 2002 models and later?..Thanks...Ohdaddee

From what I understand, it is optional. The recommendation is that if the existing rear tire has 1/2 or less tread remaining, replace it. The Michelin MXV4's on my '02 V70 are very soft and would be close (if not past) the half way point at 20K. If it were a front tire, move the mismatched tires to the back and put the two matching rear tires on the front.

You do not have to change all your tires because of a bevel gear. The bevel gear problem existed only on AWDs. I had a blow-out after 10K miles and had to replaced all 4 tires once again in my 1998 AWD XC...$600 bucks, yikes...BTW, if you ever need me to inflate your tires, I'll do that manually for you.
