Terrible smell from AC vents, help..... 850 1994

My 94' 850 has developed a horrible smell in the AC system. It has gotten progressively over the past few months, its now so bad I can't stand to even turn it on.

The car sat for a long time, I'm wondering if something is growing(mold/fungus) in the vents. Isn't there a filter somewhere for the system also???

Thanks,
stinky in FLA. lol.

I'm positive its not a dead critter, its worse than swamp, I'd actually take swamp over this, ;).

I'll try the spray first, also, wheres the drain for the evaporator?

    Thanks for the Help.

Terrible smell from AC vents, help..... BioClear in the intakes 850 1994

Hey BK, go to Home Cheapo and get a spray bottle of the A/C treatment called "BioClear". Its in their A/C section. Its basically a very mild blend of Chlorox and other mildew killers. You just need to turn the Volvo's fan on "High" with it in the "Fresh Air" mode (not recirculate mode) so there is a strong vacuum there in the intakes under the rightside windshield wiper and spray this BioClear into those intakes so it gets sucked into the evaporator and drain tray area. It takes a day but it will kill the mildew and should get rid of the odor. If its still there the next day you may need to up the anty with more powerful Chlorox in the spray bottle and repeat. Then get a can of Lysol and spray it in the intake to get rid of Chlorox smell if you need to. Good luck ....... Mike ........ Miami, FL

Assuming some animal hasn't died in there... :)

Your evaporator tray drain is probably clogged.

Does it smell like a neglected dead animal or a swamp? 850 1994

My two choices also: dead animal(s) or clogged drain.

Mice etc. like to build nests in the HVAC of sitting cars, especially in the squirrel cage of the blower.

If it's just from mold, a product like "Fridgy fresh" (auto parts stores?) sprayed into the air intake (under the cowl where wiper arms are) usually helps.

          I have a 95 850 Turbo.
Volvo actually installed something in my car that runs the fan full blast for a few minutes after the car is parked to get the moisture out of the system.
It only runs if I happened to use the a/c.

I think two things need to be done 850 1994

One, you'll have to remove the evaporator and basically bleach it out.
2nd I'd install a volvo updated blower motor setup that keeps the fan running a while after shutdown to prevent this from happening.

It doensnt smell like rotten critters, but is smells worse than any swamp. I will try to use the spray first, could someone give me pointers on clearing the evaporator drain.

              Thanks for ALL the help.
