Mobil synthetic 0W30... 850

I've always used Mobil synthetic 10W30 except for the last oil change. I though I would use 0w30 being that it's colder. Now I was told that being that my car (R model) had 170,000 miles I shouldn't use 0w oil because it won't offer enough protection. Is this true? The temp. never drops below 0F. I've also noticed more "clicking" coming from the engine? Could this be because of the lower W rating (0w30)? So all in all should I be running 0w30 in a turbo car with 170,000 miles or should I be using a 10w30 or 20w50.

Thanx

The 0W-30 will offer as much protection against wear as will the 10W-30, or at least there will be so little difference you won't be able to detect it.
Both are in the same viscosity range at operating temperature. The 0W-30 will pump up a bit more rapidly in extreme cold, which should reduce wear a bit.

You may hear a bit of noise on startup, because the 0W will be a bit thinner then. Shouldn't be any wear problem associated. If the noise bothers you, go back to the 10W-30 next change.

    I'd stick with the manufacturer's recommended 10W30.

      Mobil-1 synthetic 10W30... 850

I use Mobil-1 10W30 because that's the weight Volvo recommends and they built the car, so maybe they know something. I figure I'm going them one better just by using the synthetic.

The manual will tell you what viscosity to use per temps. I would guess 5W30 would be fine.

Would using 0w30 cause valve/lifter etc clicking?

Guys- the manual actually gives a range of grade one can use. 0w30 should be fine, but sometimes when you switch you should flush first. Shouldn't make much difference thou. Now about that clicking: maybe you should put a can of fuel system cleaner at your next gas fill and see if that helps. I heard it sometimes mean your oil level may be low and need a top-up(this was in my acura legend). good luck
