Wrecked the 850, looking to buy V70 V70-XC70

We were planning on buying a V70 in few years, but on the way from having a brand new baby, I ended up rear ending a F350. Insuarance is calling it a complete loss, so now we have to get a wagon in hurry. Usaully spend a lot more time than a few days to research a car, so any advice from current former owners will be great, we thinking about going used. The 850 was a 1997 with 90K and very trouble free car, the other two vehicles are 1985 Alfa spider and a 1994 BMW R1100RS, and wife won't let me turn the rental in
thanks

I would just stay away from the pre 03 AWD models....unless you realy need AWD, and you plan to keep a close eye on the extra maintance involved with the old AWD system. The new haldex system....from what I have read.....is worlds better, and has been in use on Audi Quatros for some time.
I guess if it was me looking for a used V70.....I would look at a 99 GLT or
T-5....comming off a lease??? Try to get ALL the service records....and if you do get a good price on it....you might want to think about a VIP(or equv.)extended warranty(this could also depend on what has been done on the car already).....for $1500 or so, you could have all the "problem areas"(auto trans, evap, PNP, etc.) covered.

    good luck

The 1998 V70 is a restyle of the 850 but mechanically similar to the 1997 850, with the exception of the addition of some electrical gremlins, most of which should have surfaced and been fixed by now. The window switches are also relocated from right under the cupholder to the driver's door. With '99 came "drive by wire" and 105k timing belt change intervals.

The "new generation" '01-up V70 also has head airbags and with some models optional or standard stability control, depending on the year.

I would look at leasing an '03, prices seem very competitive at the moment.

If you have boat loads of time on your hands to "noodle" with cars, then stick with a used volvo. Otherwise go for the Honda oddessy--- you will have sooooo much time on your hands u can spend it with the new family instead of annoying repairs on the volvos! Take it from experience--my buddy is going through a divorce and thank god he has the honda odessy!!!!

My wife drives an '02 Ody LX. Excellent powertrain and space for 24 grand.

I've heard great things about the Oddesey. Great pick up, and great dependability.... AND cheap fixes unlike Volvo!!!

My brother has a 2002 Honda ODESSY, I have a 1998 Volvo V70 AWD, he doesn't have to worry about the ABS, Trac light problem, cruise breaking, and on, and on. But after driving the minivan and getting back into my Volvo, I'll keep the Volvo for now. Once we have three kids + 2 dogs the minivan might look more plausible... I'd probably skip the minivan and go shopping for a suburban...

I just came back from a mini vacation with the wife and two children in our Grand Caravan. I would not even think of taking our V-70. Where would I put all the luggage and the items purchased while away? Where would I put the cooler, snacks etc needed for an eight hour drive. Mini vans are the only way to go when you have a family.
