Noise from front left corner V70-XC70 2001

While making a U turn a few weeks ago a loud noise was heard in the front left corner. Sounded like a gear skipping and something then rubbing. Has happened several times since then but only when turning sharply to the left. The sound varies some and today it was a whinning noise like that of a childs top when it is first started spinning. Short duration, a second or two and happened when turning left a 20 mph. It was at the dealer for 2 days for this problem and the techs never heard it once, so nothing has been done. What could this be? Bearings? Constant velocity joint? Something with the AWD system? I hope it is nothing that will leave me or my wife stranded somewhere this winter. Would appreciate any feedback on this, even guesses. Thanks, Tom.

Noise from front left corner V70-XC70 1998

I had something similar. It would only happen at slow speeds when accelerating from a stop and turning which of course makes one side turn at a different speed. It was like a growl and ended up being the viscous drive and a $2000 bill. I don't know if your car is a 98 but from viewing the forums this is a common occurence with this model AWD and my second time with a repair to this area of the drive train. Gregg

You might try greasing the steering stops. Check for low power steering fluid for the whinning noise.

    Hope this helps
