Tracs Off/ ABS warning lights V70-XC70 1998

Yesterday, the Tracs Off and ABS warning lights went on in the afternoon. They went off in the evening and stayed off all day driving around town, then they went on this afternoon, went off and now they are back on. Has anybody been through something similar. Full moon was monday.

Almost certainly the ABS module V70-XC70 1998

This is a serious deficiency in the 1996 850's (where it could be one of three problems) and the 1998 70's (where it's almost always the control module).

In 1998, the encapsulated pc board cracks, breaking solder connections. An OBD scan usually returns a code for a sensor failure at the RR wheel - so this I expect is the circuit that is affected by the module failure. First, eliminate the possibility of faulty ignition switch interaction, which can also turn on the caution lights (jiggle the key before and after startup to see if the lights go off).

The module is located under the ABS block in the engine compartment, and costs $358 internet, $416 dealer. If you're good with tools, it's a DIY job; Volvo is looking to get the failed part back so there may also be a temporary core charge now. Dealers quote wildly erratic prices for making the repair - usually about $500, part included, but brickboarders have reported quotes high as $1000!

As francisira suggests, PLEASE REPORT IT TO THE NHTSA so they can see how extensive the problem is. Do it online at http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/ivoq/default.htm.

    Tracs Off/ ABS warning lights V70-XC70 1998

go to the ntsb site and fill out their on line report/complaint form. hopefully, with a lot of complaints about the abs module failures on the 850/70 cars, they might oblige volvo to change them to a better one (free). same as what happened to the turn/park lights on the s70. consistent failure of braking components is, after all, a safethy issue
    please file a report
    regards

    Hi Walter,

Just had mine fixed under extended warranty for the same problem. There is a PCB asembly that cracks due to temperature/time. I feel this should be a warranty issue due to manufacturng defects, since I noted that the assembly has been re-designed, while comparing the old part to the new. The new is made of a different circuit board material, presumably due to the frequency of repair.

Mine was free anyway, but if it hadn't been, I would have complained.

    Good luck.
