Stalling at startup V70-XC70

First, thanks for all the info gathered from you all regarding the Volvo V70s. Next, my question: I have a 1999 Volvo V70 t5 auto with 69000 miles on it. In the last 5-6 weeks it has developed a stall at start up. Car will turn over and run for 1-2 seconds, then stop. Often 3-5 starting/"grinding" cycles are required to get car started again. Sometimes it start right away, other times not. Sometimes it starts, then stalls a second time, usually on the first attempt to restart car. I have never been stuck, but I did take car to dealer for advisement on problem. Technician said they had several that have done this, and it was either a bad "recognition" chip in the key as part of the anti-theft mechanism not communicating with the antennae ring in the ignition switch/steering column or a bad antennae ring itself. He suggested switching keys, after I told him my wife doesn't seem to have problem, and it might just need a new key/chip. If problem happens on other key then it was the antennae ring itself that was bad. After three days with wife's key, problem started to reoccur again, but it seems to start up on first retry much easier than with my key. Does this make sense to any of you? Could one key be more or less "faulty" in its communication with the antennae ring/anti-theft mechanism? Do you think this would be a covered item under extended warranty/pre-certified car? Dealer did update software (of course) and car does run much better than before (it seemed hesitant/sluggish) but I was unsure as how to proceed. Try new keys first, replace antennae ring, or other suggestions about this problem.... Thanks for taking the time to read and answer, you all a big help... Stalling at startup V70-XC70

After reading my post, I wanted to clarify that this problem does not occur all the time at start-up, which is confusing me. It may go several days and start up fine, then have the stalling at start up problem. I tried to determine if it was temperature related to car temp or outside temp, but it has stalled in am and pm, at first start and also after it has been driven for a while. I am confused, but as I said car runs great otherwise (after I get it started). Thanks again, J Workman...

Did you replace the antenna ring (lighted ring around ignition switch)? I've seen that cause the same problem that you're describing here.
Here's what to look for, notice that it's normally lit. When it acts up it won't be lit but if you tap on it, it then should light up and the car will start normally. Replace it.

Well,... Car has acted up in same manner about 3 times in the last 20-30 start ups. Each time illuminated ring was lit up when car stalled. Tapping did not seem to affect "illumination" or cause car to instantly start on next try. It does seem to be less of a problem now that I have switched keys, but I can't understand why it happens so irregularly. If it is the antennae ring, shouldn't this be happening all the time? Could both keys be faulty, with on "more faulty" than the other? I haven't contacted dealer for repairs yet, because I am not sure if I should try replacing one or both keys first or have antennae ring replaced. I don't want to either if this is not going to fix problem. Any additional input/guidance would be appreciated...JWW PS- ring only seems to stay lit at first unlocking of doors or when car is running. If I wait long enough after getting in car for interior lights to go out, ring is not lit. Is this what you meant? Tapping doesn't seem to affect it though...

RJ- thanks for the input. No, I haven't done anything as of yet, and did not really know where antennae ring was really located. I will watch to see if it lights up and if tapping it works before I return to dealer. Is that a warrantied repair? Thanks again for you help and promptness. JW
