Transmission or AWD 'Thud' ..... did I buy a problem? V70-XC70

Last week I purchased a '99 XC with 44k miles which had routinely been serviced at Volvo dealerships. I thoroughly test drove the car before purchasing it. I also bought 4 new Michelin 205-65-15 tires to replace the original BFGoodrich tiress (same size).

The problem: After the car is warmed up and driving in hilly areas, when the transmission downshifts on a grade, there is a definite "thud" and slight vibration. Is this common with the XC? My S70 GLT definitely did not exhibit this downshift behavior.

Fortunately, the car is still under warranty....any comments?

Ken

Also install synthetic ATF, I noticed smoother shifts as a result. Make sure to change the rear diff ATF as well, and use synthetic there too.

This can commonly occur if the ATF needs to be flushed. Mine did the same, especially from 5th to 4th. Give it a flush and see if that fixes things. I bet you'll be satisfied.
