Tracs off light and abs light come on approximately once in 60 miles. V70-XC70 1998

For the last two weeks or so, once a day during my 60-mile commute, my tracs off light and abs light come on. There are no other symptoms. It happens during different driving situations; several times on the freeway, several times in town, accelerating, maintaining speed, or decelerating.

The lights stay on until I cycle the car from off to running, then the lights reset. Everytime I stop the car and shut off the engine, the lights reset. I have experienced no driveability issues that I can detect.

Any ideas will be appreciated. The car is a 1998 V70 AWD with 73,000 miles and no other repair issues to date, except, of course, the standard recall campaigns.

Kind Regards,

Mike Harris in Sandy Eggo

I am having the exact same problem with my 1998 S70 GLt, also with 73,000 miles! It is just as you describe. I have made an appointment to bring it in next Friday so if you can wait, I'll give you the details on what they find when I get it back.

      Hi Christina,

Thanks for answering. My appointment is on the Monday after yours, so we can compare notes. I have the extended warranty, so we can compare charges as well.

      Regards,

Well, it was the ABS control module that need to be replaced. Part cost $416.oo before my VCOA discount and then there was 2 hours labor involved (1 to diagnose, one to fix) at $75 each.

        Better luck to you!!

          Christina,

Don't know if you will see this post so late in the game. It was the controller in mine also. Extended warranty covered all but $50.00.

While the part was out, I noticed cracks on the printed circuit board of the bad part and also noted that the new part is made of a different PCB material. The tech said he has never seen a repeat problem after this part is replaced.

Note: The dealership's techs think there will be a TSB soon for this issue, and perhaps some or all of your repair will be deemed as free. If I hear further, I will pass it on here at the BB.

          Regards,

          Mike Harris in Sandy Eggo

Don't forget to log this with the NHTSA V70-XC70 1998

Make sure you log your experience with the people in charge of TSBs and safety recalls. You can do it in a few minutes at http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/ivoq/default.htm

Thanks for the write up...and confirming the widely circulated rumor that cracks in the solder or the wafer board are the problem. (I traveled to my indy tech, who had just replaced two in 1998 70's, and both had plainly visible cracks as well.)

          Thanks Christina,

I will know in a month or so, when I get back in town. Maybe my extended warranty will cover all or part. I'll post when I find out.

          Thanks again,

          Mike Harris in Sandy Eggo

Your ABS/TRACS controller is failing and will eventually need to be replaced. It's possible (but far less likely) that there's a fault in sensor detection somewhere. Check out the writeup on ABS/TRACS at http://www.volvospeed.com/bay13.htm

    Hey Mike,
I have seen this problem a few times and it turns out t be the abs/tracs ecu. It has an internal fault that posts a DTC of443 Pump motor, elect. or mechanical fault. You need to go to a shop, dealer the best option, and describe the sypmtom. Ask if they can hook up the Volvo System Tester( VST ) and read out any diagnostic trouble codes. If the above code does turn up, the only repair is to replace the computer(abs/tracs). Hope this helps.

    Regards
    Gazzer
