Check Engine Light comes on for awhile, then goes off for awhile, then comes on . . . 850 1996

Hello again,

It's been awhile since I've posted. Hope everyone's well.

My check engine light came on the other day and went off after about 2 days. Came on 2 days later, went off the next day. It's on again today.

Car runs fine, 68k miles, conditions are different each time. Once was sitting in traffic, once was driving with cruise on. No noticeable change in performance whatsoever. The only thing I can think of (and it's a long shot) is the Mrs. put 87 octane in it, which was when the light came on. The gas cap is not loose.

Is my oxygen sensor calling for help? Is a vacuum line cracked (again, no difference in performace)? Unfortunately I don't have a code reader, and I searched the archives. ("check engine light" is a big freaking topic)

I left 3 messages and 1 email to get appointment with dealer, but they never returned my call. Funny thing: yesterday I get something from them in the mail saying "it's time for service, give us a call." I may just take it in when I get the chance.

Thanks for your help.

    Jim,
The "check engine" lamp will come on any time a fault code has be stored with anything associated with emissions. In other words, any component that would effect the emission specifications other then "normal" will trigger the lamp. Their are some obscure transmission codes that will also trigger the "check engine" lamp as the transmission not behaving properly will inadvertantly affect the emissions. Your best bet is to stop guessing and have your OBD read by the dealer. They will find a code or codes to know where to start...
