Locating A/C refrigerant ports? 850

O.K., I spent at least 20 minutes trying to locate the "low port" so I can attempt to re-charge my R-134a. I noticed a yellow warning type sticker on the top of the passenger side strut housing, that spoke of "R-134a" and a 1.63 lbs. recommendation to fill-up but no ports. Can anyone help me out? My haynes manual sucks as far as any sketches/drawings for location.

Thanks!

I, too, looked all over for a low pressure port. I realized (after advice from a reply yesterday)that you need to check the pressure with the car running and the A/C on. It works like a charm.
You can pick up a recharge kit with a pressure gauge at Target, Wal-Mart, etc. for about $25-30. Cheap fix.

      Dan:
Thanks. yes, I bought the kit last Firday at WalMart but it did not include
the pressure gauge. Is this absolutely necessary? If so, can I buy a gauge separately somehwere else?

P.S. What pressure is considered low for our 850's and what is the max press?

      Thanx!

You probably need a pressure guage but might get by without it. The "correct" pressure is between 25 and 40 psi. Mine was at about 15psi and one can brought it up to 45psi. I know you aren't supposed to overcharge them but I don't know what happens if you do.

If you can follow this example you might get by without a guage:
My A/C blew warm/cool (never cold) air and you could hear the system cycling on and off every few seconds. Watching the pressure guage while it was cycling, I noticed the system cycled off when the pressure dropped below 25psi (the low end of normal). As the system charged and the pressure went up into the normal range, the cycling stopped. Conclusion: Stop filling after you notice the cycling stop and you should be OK.

One other thing. You're should use the refill with the oil (lubricant) in it. You're supposed to add 2oz oil to every 12oz refrigerant.

        I hope this helps.

        Dan

yeah the low port has a black cap on it that says 6NM. it is located on a pipe that is next to the left side of the engine (passenger side) and this pipe goes from the front all the way to back. look to the right of the winshield washer, power steering pump resevoirs.

Yes, I did see that black cap but when I tried to turn it counter-clockwise it wouldn't budge. Does the cap actually screw off?

yes it should come off. i don't recall using any kind of wrench on it but maybe somebody decided to tighten it too much. it should be a hex shaped cap, trying a socket and an extension, it should come off rather easily.

        good luck
