Help ... Flat Tire on an AWD ... what are my options? V70-XC70 1998

Just needed some ideas. Woke up this morning and found my front right tire flat. It is a small cut perhaps less than 1/2 an inch. Tried pumping the tire but the air leak through the cut is too quick. Wondering what my options are? I know about AWD and the notoriusly stringent requirement to have all 4 wheel wheels with same treads.

1. Is a small cut on a tire repairable? Or am I doomed to buy a set of new tires?
2. If the tire is a goner, should I buy one of these cans of foam repair and buy some tire while I shop for a set of new tires.
3. Does Volvo VIP protection help at all in this matter?

Help ... Flat Tire on an AWD ... DIDN'T TURN OUT AS BAD AS I THOUGHT V70-XC70 1998

The bad news was that the tire was not repairable so that basically meant 4 new tires. Realized VIP protection had a tire road hazard clause with $25 deductible. Went to Volvo and tried to push for coverage for all four because of Volvo's bulletin not to change just one tire ... but no luck. They stood on just replacing the flat one. That means VIP would pay for one, I would have to dish out for three.

But instead of getting Michelins which the dealer stocked at dealer prices ($197 Cdn), I went to a tire store. Already researched and short listed Dunlop Sp5000 or Toyo TPT, price almost exactly the same ($175 Cdn). Guy at store convinced me to go with Dunlops and so I changed all four for the price of 3 + $25 deductible. Treads on my Continentals were down to less than 1/2. Got myself an early upgrade of tires.

Wasn't a great day for the wallet, but not as bad as it could have been.

Four new $tires < $bevel gear < $transmission. Why chance it? Get the tires.

With ABS anD AWD, you are probably going to be told to replace all 4 tires. Assuming the same brand and make, you may be able to get away with just one tire. Thats assuming that your tires are fairly new. If not you need 2 new tires. If you have more than 4/10 wear you might consider replacing all 4.

Take your tire to a real tire shop. I have been going to the Stansfield Tire Center for over 35 years. A good tire shop will tell you if they can do anything with your old tire.

The last time I had to get rid of a tire, my shop had a take-off that was a perfect match for the Michelins on my car.

The same can be said for my dealer, they have about 300 wheels in a barn, maybe your dealer has something that will fit your car.

The circumfrence of a tire can be measured easilly, you might even measure all of the remaining tires and find that a new set is in order anyways.

A tire shop or a dealer might be able to give you a properly sized but unmatched tire for the short run.

Good luck. You could be far worse off.

A speed shop might be able to shave a new tire to match the existing three, a little bit of a waste, but it might be a an option to think about. It depends on the wear left on the other three. If they're about due anyway, just suck it up and replace all four now rather than take tread off of a new tire.
