Moaning Noise? And what is Stop Lug Recall? V70-XC70 1999

I took my 1999 V70AWD (LPT) in at 27000 miles to have the upper torque brace bushing replaced under warranty. While in there I also asked them to diagnose a low moaning noise that sometimes emanates from the front end during turns. I figured maybe the power steering pump was complaining, but they responded by flushing the tranny fluid. Two questions:

1. Anyone else had a persistent low moaning noise come from the front end during turns, and did changing the transmission fluid do anything for you?

2. The shop also performed an "adjust and replace stop lug" service, per "Recall 101A." News to me. Anyone know what that is?

Thanks

Tom

The moaning noise at low speed turns is trans final drive. Sounds like low P/S fluid. Complete flush using synthetic fluid is the TSB repair. Has cured all cars I've seen doing this to date.

The stop lug recall for the headlights was done because some headlight wipers were known to park beyond the stops due to weak stops. This would then result in harm to the wiper motors on next use.

Hi,

I've got the low noaning during turns on my 95 850. Mine was caused by low fluid level in power steering. Check your power steering fluid level. If it is low (which I believe that the case), top it with ATF. This will also make the steering wheel operate smoother and you'll notice it. I have no idea on your second question sorry. I hope the above helps.

That's to do with the headlamp wipers - its the stop lugs that help the wipers park when not in use. Apparently on some Volvos some were missing or were not installed. They are visible at the forward lower edge of the headlamp housing if present.
Cheers,
TB

Stop lugs: that's it exactly, thank you! In fact my wife started the headlamp wipers once when they were stuck under the lugs, and the motors made such a holy screeching noise, she called me at work -- scared to drive the car.

Moaning & the P/S fluid solution: sounds totally logical, I'll check the fluid level tonight.

Thank you all VERY much for the good wisdom.

Tom
