Missing under hard acceleration V70-XC70

I have a 1998 V70 GLT with 73K miles. When I punch it, the car starts missing in the higher RPMs, around 4K I think.

Today I got on it, and the CEL went off. This happened once before, and my mechanic said the code indicated a misfire condition. I asked him to save the numeric code, but he forgot.

He wants to replace the ignition wires (at his cost), but I thought I read somewhere here that this problems would more likely be the cap/rotor (cheaper as well).

Thoughts?

Thanks.

I would be more inclined to suspect the cap and rotor as the problem. Especially if they are original. Wires would not be likely to be bad at that mileage and age. Also, if the miss is intermittent, i.e. not every fifth cycle, it would make me futher suspect the cap and rotor rather than the wires. It's likely that only one wire would be bad rather than all of them. Inspecting the cap and rotor might give some indication. If a quick cleaning of the contact points eases the problem temporarily, that would clinch it.
