Summary of problems with 1998 V70 GLT (70k miles) V70-XC70 1998

For the record, here are the things that have gone wrong on my 1998 V70 GLT:

- A/C evaporator ($1000.) Went bad at 51,000 miles (1k miles over warranty) but Volvo of US refused to help.
- Sunroof magically opened by itself one (rainy) day. Button was inoperative. Dealer replaced computer module under warranty.
- Winshield washers have never works. 6 trips to dealer (Annapolis Volvo) and problem was never resolved.
- At 70k miles, car becomes harder to start (90% sure its a stuck check valve in the fuel pump). Not ready to spend the $ to replace the pump.
- Air pump is dying. Every now and then it produces a wonderful grinding/spinning sound. When it eventually dies, I'll have to have it replaced ($700).
- TRACS has never worked. I don't really care, but it's goofy. I drive quite gently, but it takes nothing to spin the MXV4's I drive.
- Leather panel (rear door) delaminated. (Warranty repair.)

I'll leave out the commentary, but I did decide to pull my service records for the other cars I've owned (just to see if I was going insane) -
Toyota Camry (115k miles and going). No maintainance but oil changes and tires.
Honda civic. (125k miles; sold when our first baby arrived...). No maintenance but oil changes and tires.
Honda CRX (150k miles; sold). Same, but I did replace the clutch and A/C compressor.
Dodge Stratus. Blew up in front of my house 5 minutes after I turned it off one day (12 months after I bought it; 13k miles).

The V70 clearly takes a distant second to the Dodge on my 'crappy cars' list, but there's _no_ way it's worth the $ I've put into it. If it wasn't for friendly folks like those here at the brickboard, I would have dumped the thing already. I hope the info above is useful to some one here.

Thanks, brickboard!

    Summary of problems with 1998 V70 GLT (70k miles) V70-XC70 1998

I currently am driving an 855 Turbo. Other than a rear main seal she has been great. I have been looking at R's but have had no luck locating a 95 T5-R wagon. The 98 AWD R looks pretty sweet(no torque steer), they are easier to come by but Consumer Reports says stay away and now I read these messages. Does anyone out there have an early AWD R or Cross Country they are happy with?

    Summary of problems with 1998 V70 GLT (70k miles) V70-XC70 1998

I do believe the Dealer makes a big differance.
When I lived in MD, I bought my first brick (94 850 turbo) from Koons Volvo in Owings Mills. They were excellent at the sale, and also good service. I would always get a loaner to drive, and never had any problem re-occur.
Now that I live in Reno Nevada, the story is different. The dealer here is a joke, to say the least. I know many people who walked out the sales floor door, shaking the heads (myself included). I expierianced their service only once to never return. How could my car leave with more problems than it arrived...huh??

I have an independant Volvo specialist here, and all 3 bricks run great.

      Indies..... V70-XC70 1998

      Exactly.

Usually one bad Volvo dealer will generate enough competent yet disgruntled techs to supply one indy shop. We have 2 Volvo dealers and 1 SAAB dealer locally.

I have 3 fine indy shops (2 Volvo, 1 Volvo/SAAB) within easy driving distance.

Trying to keep one of these cars running to warranty/factory specs ("replace everything with new parts") is insane, IMO. The only way to keep financial sanity is to find an indy.

Also have a fine Mercedes indy shop if my left foot ever gets tired and I need to become shiftless.

    Expectations V70-XC70 1998

I share your pain, in fact I share an even LONGER list of problems with my car! It's interesting the Volvo has probably been about as reliable, or unreliable as my "best" SAAB. So why am I disappointed? Because Volvo markets the cars as being incredibly long-lived, and if you drive a SAAB for 150,000 miles and it doeesn't catch fire once, you're amazed. If you buy a Volvo and the sunroof sticks, you're disappointed.

I think my car is a lot of fun to drive, but it's hardly been trouble free. Cost has "probably" been less than driving an '89 Porsche Carrera (the performance envelopes are similar)when you add the cost of the repairs to the cost of the speeding tickets.

I always recommend Camrys and Avalons to people who I like and who aren't as "involved" with their cars. There is a lot of stuff on a Volvo that isn't found anywhere in a Camry or Avalon, and so can't it break. Did you know that ABS is still an option on some Camry models?

For real fun, try buying a 7-series BMW and driving it to 150,000 miles!

    Summary of problems with 1998 V70 GLT (70k miles) V70-XC70 1998

So from your message have you found that the Annapolis Volvo was useless. That is the dealer I just bought from a month ago and have not had them service the car yet, they just had to put the right tires on and fix a door lock knob under warrenty so far. So I am looking for feedback on their service department basically, and I don't want to assume anything from your message. I've heard good things about Annapolis Volvo's service department from a co-worker and other people, so I'm hoping that I can find a good service department.

As for the other types of cars you have had (in that same geographic area?), I just got rid of my Toyota 4Runner (5 years old and 103k) for a Volvo because I could not find a good place to get my Toyota serviced in the Annapolis area (poor quality and in some cases rude service writers), I had to do more than oil changes and tires on my Toyota too. Unfortunately I found a possibly decent dealer in Clarksville by the time I was fed up with the Toyota dealers in Annapolis and Glen Burnie and was working on my husband for a new car. My husband has a Toyota Camary still that has had money sunk into it and the check engine light keeps coming on after large $ repairs, he no longer will take it to the local dealers either and has turned to an independent mechanic (it is 9 years old, maybe over 130k). When he lived in Virginia he had excellent service from a dealer in his area. We have both had enough bad problems with local Toyota dealers and end result in our cars after service that we will not buy another Toyota while living in this area. I had a Honda Accord before the Toyota and had no problems with the car, I did feel the local dealer was very expensive and took it elsewhere to other dealers and eventually an independent garage before moving onto a new car.

I think all manufacturers can put out lemons (yes some more than others), and I also think having a good dealer/service department also plays a large role in the car ownership experience.

      Summary of problems with 1998 V70 GLT (70k miles) V70-XC70 1998

I should point out that I don't live in Annapolis (I used to) and that the time factor is also involved. They only provide a loaner for big $ repairs, and it takes me about 45 minutes (one way) to get there. That means my wife has to follow me down (with the kids...), and we get to do the same thing when its time to pick the car back up. Imagine doing this 6 times (I have the receipts to prove it) for a silly windshield washer issue that never gets fixed. If I lived down the street from them, I might be more forgiving. But in this case, we're talking 1.5 hours x 2 x 6 = 18 hours of driving.

They folks you meet at the service area are nice, but you don't know who's actually working on the car. My experience tells me they're simply too busy for their own good. They might be great people, but they don't seem to have the time or desire to respect my needs as a customer. The trial-and-error approach to car repair isn't acceptable at $75/hour.

Finally, I do have a great honda/toyota mechanic. I agree with you point that this makes a big difference in how enjoyable your car experience is. I believe I've found a decent Volvo shop as well, but it will take a bit more time to see.

    Summary of problems with 1998 V70 GLT (70k miles) V70-XC70 1998

Unfortunately, I have to agree. I used to belong to the Religion of Volvo, converting the heathen owners of American and Japanese cars but I have left the church.

I have a 1998 V70 which I bought new (just finished a thread on Air conditioning woes). I could record an equally long record of problems I've had with this car. I've tried to get most things done under warranty, but that ran out long before the broken things were fixed.

At this point in time, I would never advise a friend or family member to buy a Volvo. For the money, the risk of getting a lemon is just too high. And other companies have come a long way on the safety issues--expecially when safety becan selling cars.

If I want the feel of a European car, I would buy a new Passat. I would recommend a Mercedes to more wealthy friends. If I want quiet and super reliability, then I would go with a Camry or Avalon (personal preferences).
Any way I figure, I would wholeheartedly recommend a new Volvo only to a few people--those against whom I hold a grudge.

Unfortunately, I agree 100% with your assessment of Volvo and Japanese cars. I own a 98 S70 Volvo and would never buy another Volvo. This car is basically for wealthy people who can afford to dump the car after the warranty period.

      come on you guys!!!
I agree that my Volvo has costed me more money than my buddy's Toyota pickup, but then again, I love my car like he would never love his pickup. There's something to be said about driving a Swedish machine that can't be said about Jap/ American cars. I am a big European car fan and the 850/70/60 legacy is one of the best in European car manufacturers. Straight 5 TURBO BABY!!!!!!!!

I agree with you - Volvos deserve to be on a pedestal. Unfortunately, as I stare at the ominous ABS/Trac light and listen to the grinding noise from the right side wheel when ever I turn left, the only pedestal I can think of at the moment is the lift at my local dealer....

If it was documented by the dealer, that your a/c was non-functional 6 months prior to you bringing it in for repair, then they have to repair it under warranty. You didn't choose to wait 6 months to have the a/c repaired, that was the dealers decision and they are obligated to repair under warranty.
