weird starting problem V70-XC70 1998

I have this weird starting problem with my 1998 V70 GLT:
- when starting it for the first time in the morning, no problem
- when doing a hot start, no problem
- when I start after having it parked somewhere for more than 45 minutes, it takes it 4 to 5 seconds to start, then the engine has hesitations for 2-3 more seconds. You can also smell gasoline around the car.

Any idea?

Some info on the car:
- battery brand new, fully tested -> no problem
- alternator tested by myself and a mechanic -> no problem
- spark plugs + fuel filter changed at 62000 miles
- car has currently 86000 miles

Thanks!

Sylphe

How about the cam sensor tried cooling it with cold water or ice and see if starts right up.

Has all the scheduled maintenance been done on your car?

When I started driving, 24,000 miles was enough for 4 sets of plugs.

The gas smell could forecast a catalytic converter failure or worse yet, a fire hazard.

I'd take the car to my dealer.

I've read quite a few posts that describe a lot of parts swapping to try to fix a problem that could be repaired with an hour's labor by a good technician with the proper equipment.

      Thanks for your answer!

Well I should probably remove the "smell gasoline" mention. I noticed that only once, and when I tried tonight I could not smell anything. I have also carefully inspected my car's parking place and I did not find any trace of gasoline.

But the starting problem has been going on for the last 2 weeks and can consistently be reproduced. It is almost looking like:
      - engine cold: start OK
      - engine warm: hard to start
      - engine hot: start OK

I am going to take the car to the dealer, but unfortunately they are fully booked until Thursday. So I have to leave with this problem until then (unless I find a way to fix it myself).

I have been thinking about changing the plugs, but after reflexion I do not think they are the problem. If they were the car would be hard to start every time.

BTW if you know a good mechanic in the bay area, I would be very happy to show him the car.

      Sylphe
