Check Emgine light on 850 1996

One very hot day last week (97 degrees) my Check Engine light came on while I was driving. What little the manual says about this warning light makes it sound like a minor issue likely related to the emission system in some way. I'm hoping the hot weather caused some pressure problem within the fuel supply and it's simply a sensor that needs to be reset.

On other cars I've had, this light only came on in cases of dire neeed of investigation. (like a blown hose and rocketting engine temp)

All fluids seem fine, the gas cap is secure, (although a third party cap, has been for two years, no light) and engine temp stays exactly where it should be.

I'll deffinitely get it looked at ASAP but I don't think I can pick my brother up from the airport on my Vespa.

Any words of warning or assurance?

Thanks, Alan

For me the only time the light came on was traced to a faulty catalytic converter. Remember Volvo's color coding system...yellow=caution, get to a dealer soon. red=immediate attention, stop and get help now. Check engine is yellow and only relates to emmision items.

The only time I saw my check engine light go on was when my 02 sensor broke. Trying to figure out what went wrong on my own, I drove it for a week until finally handing it over to the mechanic. This was a while back.

      Ed -

When your O2 sensor went out, what were the symptoms? My 93 850 is running very rich and dies at idle, misses at steady speed, but seems happy under hard acceleration.
