850 horsepower? 850

according to a website called 850 Styling, "This year (1995) the 850 also could be equiped with a 2.0 litre engine with 126 hp it was called S 2.0 and the S 2.5 (before GL) got 4 extra hp."

does anyone have one of these? were they available in the states? as i understand it, all non-turbo 850s and S70s have the same 2.4L engine capable of producing a stock output of 168hp. i did a brickboard search for a previous thread on this topic but i didn't come up with anything helpful. thanks in advance...

In some countries, you pay more in taxes and insurance if your
engine is over 2 liters. So, it is one of those magic numbers.

I think 200 horsepower is another one in other countries and you
then see a lot of 197 HP engines.

The 2.0's were not available in the U.S.

The 2.5 probably comes from the Volvo engine designations:

B5204 -- 5 cylinder, 2.0 liter, 4 valves per cylinder
B5254 -- 5 cylinder, 2.5 liter, 4 valves per cylind
B5252 -- 5 cylinder, 2.5 liter, 2 valves per cylinder
B5234 -- 5 cylinder, 2.3 liter, 4 valves per cylinder

The 2.5L/2.4L engine is 2435 cc so I guess it depends if you
round up, or down.

did u know, s80 models in the u.s. get only the inline-6 and twin-turbo inline-6. other countries get the s80 with the inline-5 from the 70 series too, boy, did the engine bay look spacious =).

Yep, there are a total of EIGHT different engines available for an S80 model.

that's krazy.. i didn't know that. those must be slow as hell, then. i used to sell volvos so i've driven an s80 or two and those T6's move out.

But with fuel at $5.00 a gallon (in some places) I bet the smaller engine starts to make a lot of sense (I suppose they get diesels in some
regions, too).

Pretty much all regions except USA/Canada.

The new D5 engine rocks! 170Hp doesn't sound like much, but it actually has more torque than the T5 from lower rpm's, so it's actually very, very nice to drive.

Pity it has become almost impossible to sell turbodiesel passenger cars in the US as this would make one hell of a long distance cuiser (powerful, smooth and quiet) with very low consumption figures (around 40 to 45 mpg should not be a big problem).

Bye, Arno.

As im in the uk i cant say whether they are availible, firstly why buy a 2.0L 10V(126bhp) when gas is so cheap there. Ive a 2.3 turbo and when not using the turbo is just about right in terms of power.

Trust me a 126bhp in a car that weighs near on 1500kg is not going to be enjoyable. Go for a 2.4/5 20V valve that produces 168bhp.

Cyl / CC BHP MPH 0-60 MPG

2.0 10v 5/1984 126 121 11.5 31.3
2.0 20v 5/1984 143 125 10.6 30.7
2.5 10v 5/2435 140 127 10.1 30.6
2.5 20v 5/2435 170 131 9.1 30.6
2.5i TDi 5/2461 140 125 9.9 46.7
AWD 2.5 5/2435 193 137 8.5 25.2
T5 5/2319 225 149 7.4 29.5 ---- Go for one of these
850R 5/2319 250 155 6.7 29.5 ---- Go for one of these

i wouldn't want one of the 2.0L 850s... they have to be ridiculously slow. granted the 2.4 is not that quick, either. i have a 2.4 170hp, which may be sluggish, but here in the states you couldn't get an 850 turbo in manual. if it comes down to a fun car to drive (manual) versus a fast but boring (automatic) car, i will take the manual. but let's not make this a stick versus auto debate. did they have 850 turbo sticks over there in the UK? you make reference to 2.5L... i thought they were all 2.4 NA or 2.3T, no?

Sticks are availiable but no where near a common as the auto.Normally customers would have to pay extra to have the auto box. Hear the uk if you want a manual T5 then the ex-police are worth looking at as they only used manuals. In a way i would like a manual as its more fun and your interacting with the car alot more. But i spend a lot of time in traffic so the auto box is a life saver.

I originally had a volvo 480(not availiable in usa) it had 109bhp and i thought that was quick.

Go for a T5 you will love the power and bcos its a turbo you can drive it as a normally aspirated engine of use the turbo and then its like having a 5.0L V8 under the bonnet.

funny you compare the T5 to having a V8... i would love to have a V8 swap in my 850. my brother's got a mustang GT with a 5.0 in it, and i doubt there is a volvo that will put it down. then again, he's got it supercharged as well.

a T5 manual 850 is my dream car. if we had them in the states, i would surely hunt one down. if the opportunity came along, i would consider a T5 manual S70, but i just don't care much for the S70. i also live in a traffic infested area... i can see why an auto box would be a big advantage.. no arguement there.

I believe you have to go to Canada in order to get a turbo stick... Sucks for US! Dunno about overseas.

I really enjoy shifting...being in control of when and where to shift. Do I want more power here? What about here? I don't want to step on the gas and then WAIT for a second before the transmission decides to shift FOR me.

Methinks that when I achieve the means, a trip to Canada in search of a nice 855R with a manual tranny might be in order... :)

at one time, my parents had a 940 sedan and wagon, both turbocharged and automatic. in fact, the first car i ever really drove was the 940 turbo wagon. i definitely appreciate turbo, but i would rather be driving 5-speed. obviously if i had both i would be in heaven, though. all i meant to say was that despite the fact that my 850 is slow in comparison to a turbo, i still enjoy driving it very much.

Okay 850 owners- what's the story? I own an '88 745ti with the manual M46 tranny. I've driven a couple of automatics, same car, and they tend to be much slower. I just test drove my first 855- 95, dealer maintained, 5 speed, 20v. Seems as slow as my old 240s. Rated horsepower is about the same as my 745ti, and they both have over 100K miles. The 855 doesn't seem to be running dead on, but should my 745 really be night and day faster than the 2.4L I5?

I really like the car, and am hoping with some tweaks the 855 5 speed could be a decent crusier. What's the first step towards speeding up a NA 850?

Thanks-
Dylan

unfortunately, most of the upgrades for 850s are chip upgrades for turbo models only. there's almost nothing you can do to an NA 850 other than a good free-flow exhaust and a slightly modified intake. i have those mods on mine but i don't consider it to be a racer, it's just fun to cruise in. but then again, as i said, i prefer to drive stick than to go fast in an auto.

there is one website called eastern aerospace (i think) that has a lot of expensive aftermarket volvo upgrades. some of these include turbo kits for NA and even nitrous kits. and at the prices, it hardly seems worth it. then again, with the price of a pre-owned 850 dropping lower, maybe there will be more of an aftermarket interest as more younger people start driving them? just a thought.

This comes up here often. There is very little you can do to
a NA 850 to get more power. Basically, it is cheaper to sell it
and buy a used turbo model so the after-market does not really
have anything for them.

Mine can be a dog.. especially with the AC on... You really have to rev them out to get 'em to move... kinda like a honda civic. Sucks but you get used to it.

I'm open to inexpensive mod ideas too... hopefully someone will post back.

Thanks for the feedback- you reminded me that the A/C was on, and it was the mountains around West Point NY. I see your tag line reading "ask about timing marks". This car, while dealer serviced, has been to lots of dealers- the owners are military, and have moved around a lot. Their maintence is thorough, but the motor seems like it should have a little more oomph, even without a turbo.
