idle control valve 850

my car idles just fine when i start it up. however, when i am braking toward a traffic stop, the revs drop well below 1000 and the engine fails. this never happens in a parking lot or driveway, but only on the roads when i am deccelerating from higher speeds. it's a manual tranny, so i can just keep it out of gear and start it up and go on my way without pulling over, but obviously i plan on having it serviced. the volvo tech i spoke to said it sounds like a problem with the idle control valve. has anyone else had this problem? any ideas of approximate repair costs? thanks in advance for any insight.

You can probably change this part in 5 minutes. The part is like a large T with two large hoses atteched to it and it's very close to the trottle plate.

thanks for the tip. i found the part online for about $70, so assuming the labor is as simple as you say, they shouldn't be draining my wallet on this. i would love to attempt it myself but living in an apartment without a private driveway, i try not to attempt any self maintenance. thanks much.

well i've been looking for an excuse to have it looked at anyway. embarassingly enough, i never bothered to look under the hood to see if i could attempt to find the problem myself. the mechanic popped the hood and there was a big gaping hole in the hose leaving the airbox. so it probably isn't even the idle control valve. i feel stupid.
