Referral - Volvo is cheap? S70 2000

Board,

Have a buddy who was all set to purchase YET ANOTHER Pontiac minivan, when I convinced him to go out and test drive the V70XC. He ended up purchasing the vehicle through overseas delivery. I contcated the dealership and said "hey, this guy was all but in a Pontiac before i sent him over" and they are treating me to....tadahhhh....an oil change, at my next scheduled maintenance!!!

Don't know guys and gals....I sold them a 42K vehicle and I get a free oil change when I pay for an overpriced servicing? Opinions?

Would the value of the oil change have to be declared as income next
April? Hardly worth the hassle.

Well, maybe he's angry because the oil change they offered wasn't for synthetic?

You mean a dealer and for what? S70 2000

Your "beef" here isn't with Volvo, it's that you oddly expect something for nothing from a local dealer people. Why should they do anything really just because you refered them a potential customer? They owed you nothing for that.
I often make suggestions, give others my opinions on what I happen to like yet I expect nothing in return when they purchase something just because I gave them my advice.

Grow up.

Maybe negotiate your brokerage fees first before you do the service. They sorta had you over the barrel.....

Re-read his story. I think you're misunderstanding what he said. There was no deal.

Nope I understood him perfectly. That's EXACTLY the point...there was "no deal", now he is EXPECTING compensation for his "brokerage" duties. So if he expects compensation he should set the TERMS first...not waltz in and bitch here about only getting an oil change for his efforts.

...but it sounds to me that all he did was make a suggestion to his friend and who doesn't do that everyday? I do that very often yet expect nothing as I didn't really do anything noteworthy IMO, certainly nothing worth $$$.

Out of curiousity, what were your expectations? A free set of tires? Free maintence for a year? Free extended warranty? Fact is, they didnt have to give you anything.

Let this be a lesson to those scared of all the complaining on this board... people complain around this board even when given things for FREE!!!!

Cheap! $34485 (XC 'street price') won't pay for a year's tuition + room & board at a good college today! S70 2000

You did well with the oil change. I sold about half a dozen SAABs and never received anything in return. Although one former colleague did receive a set of sheepskins for her own SAAB for just one sales referreal. She's cute, though. BTW, after recommending those SAABs, the only car I recommend now is the Toyota Camry. It keeps me the few friends I have left after recommending all the SAABs.

Just my opinion. S70 2000

When I get a referall that I SELL a car to, I send the person who sent them to me a $50 Check or Gift Cert. to a local rest. If this guy is expecting more than that he should keep in mind the average commission on a new Volvo is between $100 and $200 for the salesperson who will many times spend hours working on the deal. If he feels cheated by the oil change then I suggest he get a job selling them.

I sent a neighbor to my local Volvo dealer (concord, NH) who then went for a used S40. A month later Volvo sent me a $250 referral check; completely unexpected, but appreciated. Since then I have referred two more customers to them and have received $100 checks for each. I guess they're a little more generous then what you guys have been dealing with....
