To do the drain and replacement of the tranny fluid by the BOOK, one is required to drain the tranny, and then, by disconnecting the return oil cooler line proceed with a procedure that entails running the vehicle and allowing the fluid to be pumped out of the tranny via the cooler line, adding more fluid, and repeat the procedure THREE TIMES.
My Volvo dealer, on being asked to perform this procedure on my vehicle, recommended that I take my vehicle to an independent service, that uses the BG PF5 POWER FLUSH AND FLUID EXCHANGE SERVICE equipment and procedure. This equipment will power flush and exchange the fluid in ones tranny on a 100% basis, without MIXING the old and new fluids per the BOOK'S procedure.
This is what I had done, and with the pre-drain cleaning additive and the post drain additive treatment, my tranny had NEVER PERFORMED AS SMOOTH AS IT IS PRESENTLY!! This service-drain procedure is recommended every 30,000 miles to preserve the peak operating performance of ones tranny, plus insure its longevity.
The service tab per the above, will cost $100 to $130 dollars, depending on the service dealer in your area, but then, compare this cost to the BOOK procedure of a Volvo dealer. The fluid used in the BG equipment is usually the standard petroleum based product, not synthetic.
