Crash test data 850

Does anyone know of any sites that compare different vehicle types to each other. I know that Volvo's are among the safest cars in the world but I am in an argument with a lot of people in school that think that a person in a newer Ford Expedition would be better off than someone in an 850 in a head on collision with eachother. They just automatically assume that because it is a big SUV and that it ways more and is higher off the ground (although I don't know how that would make a difference) that it is safer for the passengers. They just don't understand safety engineering and crumple zones and all. So I am looking for sites or other sources for facts that I can show them and disprove them.

Any help with this is greatly appreciated.

PS: I tried showing them the volvo survival stories out there but they want actual data.

This testing is actually performed thousands of times every day, and the results are available... 850

....from the insurance industry (which gets to pay all the claims, after all) at....

    http://www.hwysafety.org/default.htm

They publish both injury rates and occupant death rates by vehicle size and make/model.

Anyway, the people you are arguing with managed to stay awake during their physics classes. I'd pick the Ford Expedition over any Volvo automobile (not any Volvo truck) for a head-on crash.

"Crumple zones", 8 airbags or whatever, here is simply no PRACTICAL way to make a 2000 pound car as safe as a 4000 pound car, never mind a 6000 pound truck. That's basic physics. Sorry.

This page gets a lot of attention:

not sure what conclusions to draw other then don't run head-on into
    a Volkswagon Van.

Now, if both those vehicles were driven into a wall, the Volvo
would be the better vehicle to be in.

Try the NTSB web site. www.ntsb.gov.

Elaborate on head on. Head on into a brick wall, or a Volvo taking a head on with a large SUV. If it were the latter the SUV would destroy the Volvo. It comes down to simple mass. Most fatal crashes are not caused by passenger intrusion though. Usually it’s something like inter cranial pressure from trauma, or a transected/ruptured aorta, or so on. If its a head on with a wall or tree mass has almost no effect on the out come, as your assumeing that the wall is imovable

i don't know many sites with crash test results. but...i often look at suvs and see their bumpers coming right up to my shoulders when i'm sitting in my wagon. just "feels" like if he were to t-bone me, i'd be in more damage than he would (almost bumper against window). turn it around, i'd have to think i'm hitting a structural beam somewhere in the door. also...they're so much heavier...try running and hitting or taking down a nfl linemen (or rugby player for non-u.s. folks =). assuming u and i are "average" men, that's not gonna happen.. we'll probably bounce off with little movement for him. no doubt all that bulk helps a little.

then again, i side track. given a volvo or suv? i'd take a volvo anyday. our cars are so much more nimble, and less susceptible to flips...weight has it's downsides too...u just can't slow down fast enough. my 2 cents
