Hi,
I would not recommend letting the transmission pump the old ATF. And here are my reasons;
1) Draining gets you 3 and ½ qts. Pumping gets you 4 qts before the toque converter goes dry.
2) Letting the transmission run dry can cause damage to the transmission toque converter bearings.
3) I have not been able to fill the transmission with fresh oil as fast as the transmission can pump out the old oil. It is a race that one does not necessary have to live with. The transmission can pump out 4 qts in about 30 seconds. It takes 30 seconds to add just one qt of oil (tiny fill hole).
4) It will require you to have several people the do a pump. One to turn off the engine if the transmission goes dry. One to monitor the oil coming out of the transmission and hold the hose so the oil being pumped does not get all over the place (the oil comes out with the speed of a garden hose). And if you do a simulations oil fill the same time you do a pump you will need a person to fill the oil. Of course if you have everything set up just right you could get away with just one person doing all 3 tasks. A pain at best, I been there done that.
5) And last you will need an extension hose so you can pump the oil into a pan that is on the ground. Also you may need to replace the 2 o-rings that seal the hose connection at the radiator.
All you need for a drain is an oil pan, a 24mm box wrench and a jack. Drain and fill 12 to 16 qts of oil will get you the same results and a professional flush. Also been there and done that.
Happy Flushing,
Steven ~:-)
