Rattling Glovebox Door V70-XC70

I purchased my 1998 V70 six months and I love everything about it except the rattle in the glovebox door. I am not sure if it is the door or the panel below. Does anyone have had similar problems? Please let mw know, thanks...

In short, yes. One owner of the origional issue V70 used a piece of weatherstripping to quell the chatter. Recently he installed a new latch, but I'm not sure why. My 01 has the same problem. The dealer wrapped the bale of the latch with black tape, then packed the thing with grease. The grease ate the stickum, so the tape fell off, then my wife wiped the grease off with her clothes. We are back where we started. When it really bothers me, I'll try something else.

Thanks for the update. I am not sure if I want to use grease. I was thinking of placing a small piece of tape around the bale of the latch. I still have a month left on the original warranty. I will talk to the dealer and see if they have any ideas, but no grease! Thanks again...

I showed my mechanics how I got rid of the noise by adding some padding between the left side of the glovebox and the top of it in such a way that when I close the compartment it stops "giggling". He looked at it and provide a small piece of rubber glued on the internal left lip of the cover. It play the role of a spacer and a damper therefore getting rid of the noise.

PS.: He also tried the black tape but ended up being messy. This solution has been working for several months now and counting.

        Francois.

Thanks FD. I am still experiencing the noise and I am still not sure if it is the glovebox. I took it in to the dealer and they said it would cost me at least $80.00 for one hour labor to tighten up a few screws. I still am on the original warranty for another month, but they told me that this would not be covered under the warranty. When I showed him the service bulletin from an earlier post he stated it was for the XC and did not pertain to my model. Do you have to take all of the dashboard off to get between the glove box and the center console? Please let me know, thanks...

            Hi Nagman,

No you do not have to dismantle anything at all. If you open up the glovebox you will notice on each side a "lip" of about 1" to 2". the noise, high frequency squicky noise, is dampered if you glue a small piece of smooth rubber within that lip. The piece of rubber by Volvo technician has put on that lip is about the size of "chocolate square of a Caramilk". When closing the glovebox it will create a pressure point against the dash thus preventing the glovebox "micro-swing" that causes the noise.

The prove of it is, prior to the modification, and under driving conditions, you can eliminate the noise by applying pressure on the glovebox. You will notice the noise stop. Therefore by forcing the movement to stop - see above - the noise stop.

            Hope that help,
            Francois.
